The purpose of the BuildZoom contractor score is to provide a unit that both quantifies and summarizes some of the more important characteristics of a contractor. The score is used in a number of ways on BuildZoom:
- It informs how contractors are displayed on listing pages throughout the site.
- It helps determine which contractors are eligible to receive information about new client projects.
Here are some of the main signals the score considers (along with approximate weighting of the variable):
- License status with the governing license board (high importance)
- History of verified and permitted work (high importance)
- User reviews gathered from clients who hired through BuildZoom (high importance)
- Information gathered from local government consumer protection agencies (medium importance)
- Reviews gathered from clients who did not hire through BuildZoom (medium importance)
- Contractor participation on BuildZoom (medium importance)
A contractor can influence their own score to a certain extent, by providing high-quality answers to consumer questions in our forum or by showing a consistent track record of following-up with clients referred to them by BuildZoom, however these actions would never hold more weight than the status of their license. For example, if a contractor has a suspended license we can verify with the state, we would simply stop referring any work to them and their score would rank in the bottom 10% of all contractors listed on BuildZoom – regardless of the level of their participation on BuildZoom.
