In the past 14 days, we have filtered through almost 500,000 building permits from around the country. After spending hours looking into what construction is going on we have picked 6 projects that we think deserve a little extra attention. This week’s projects came from alerts we have created for large projects, university construction, Facebook construction, and multifamily housing.

Myrtle Woldson Performing Arts Center

Gonzaga University’s new Myrtle Woldson Performing Arts Center takes a step forward. On March 30th, a building permit for the project was submitted to Spokane’s building department and is now under review.  According to the permit, the project is estimated to cost $35 million – $5 million more than the reported initial estimate. The 58,500 square foot building will have a 750-seat theater and a 150- seat recital hall. The building will have two basement levels, a main level, a balcony level with an exterior balcony, and upper technical catwalk levels.

Whittier Choice Housing Development

In December, the Boston Housing Authority made the Whittier Choice housing project possible with a $30 million grant to help with construction costs. On March 29th, Boston’s building department issued a permit for each of the two buildings.  The permits indicate that together the buildings will cost $131 million to construct. One of the buildings will be a 6-story, 215-unit residential building, which is estimated to cost $62 million. The second building will be a 5-story, 260-unit residential building intended for low-income housing, which is estimated to cost $69 million. In addition to housing units, the first floor of each building will be dedicated to retail space.

131 Beverly Condominiums

On March 28th, a building permit for the 131 Beverly condos at Lovejoy Wharf was granted a certificate of occupancy by Boston’s building department. The  155-foot tall building in Boston’s north end will have 175 residential units for a total of 210,000 square feet. Related Beal is the developer of the project. According to permits, the $65 million project is now complete.

Sova Development

On March 23rd, a permit was issued for the $35 million Sova Development in Denver. The 12-story apartment building will be located in Denver’s Uptown district on 1901 N Grant Street.  Colorado-based developer Mckinney is responsible for the project.  The 211-unit space was designed by Craine Architecture and will be constructed by The Weitz Company.

Altman Development

On March 28th, a handful of building permits were issued by Tampa’s building department for Altman Development’s 314 unit apartment complex. In addition to the residential units, the development will include a spa, pool, sun deck, bowling alley, 644 parking spaces, and 9,340 square feet of commercial space. The first permit for the project was issued in September but these permits were the first to mention the $59 million construction costs.

Facebook’s Office

Frank Gehry is designing a $5 million renovation of facebook’s office at 221 Park Avenue South. The project was approved on March 29th and will include work on the 8th floor, the 9th floor, and the roof. JRM Construction Management is the contractor for the project.
