Aaron Gordon Construction remodeled the bathrooms of a traditional home on Sanchez Street to bring in an edgy flare. In the master bathroom, the shower was refinished with large-format porcelain tile. Sliding glass doors separate the dressing and sink area from the separate toilet and shower. The much smaller guest bathroom features a scaled-down free-standing tub with a traditional shower ring. Dated wainscotting is offset by custom-print vinyl wallpaper and a black-and-white toilet. In a Mid-Century modern Diamond Heights home, AGC completed a high-end remodel of several rooms. With plans from Atkinson Architecture, AGC updated the living room, dining room, kitchen, and bathroom of the Eichler. Sliding-mirror panels in the dining room open and brighten the space and conceal ample storage. Dark luan wood paneling and trim throughout ties together the design. In the Russian Hill area, AGC updated a kitchen and made it more functional without changing the floorplan. The contractor, instead, refaced all of the cabinetry and added a custom glass countertop overhang to the existing kitchen island.

NBR updated a Victorian home in Haight-Ashbury so that its traditional details would mesh with contemporary styling and conveniences. They transformed a non-functioning brick fireplace into an exposed brick alcove for wine storage, and retained original stained-glass windows that pop against clean lines in the kitchen and bathroom. The contractor also warmed up the space with walnut accents throughout. For a newly purchased Bernal Heights single-family home, NBR worked with the homeowners to design a truly unique kitchen. The homeowner sourced a backsplash that mixes flat honeycomb tile with protruding spheres, and NBR added Carrera marble countertops to bring in a more traditional element. In the Mission District, NBR renovated an Edwardian residence in need of a floor plan update and an additional bathroom. The contractor opened up the kitchen to the family room, making the small home feel spacious and creating space for a large kitchen island. The addition of a custom wood bar along a back window created a coffee nook with a view.

Scott & Warner Builders brought contemporary finishes to a Victorian home in Ashbury Heights. Architect Christiaan Maarse, lead architect at Studio TMT Architecture, designed an open kitchen that brings views of the back garden right to the front entryway, in what was formerly a segmented space. Scott & Warner Builders also updated the kitchen with gourmet appliances and fixtures that enhance, but do not compete with, the existing Victorian features. A 2,959 square-foot single-family home that was originally built in 1974, 2456 Filbert Street was one of the most expensive homes to go on the market in San Francisco in 2016. It was sold for $11.5M while a major remodel by Scott & Warner was still in progress, which included changing the building’s south facade from stucco to stone. For a kitchen remodel in Lamorinda, the contractor brought in sleek finishes and natural light. The kitchen features wall-mounted cabinets and a hidden rangehood of stainless steel that sits above a poured glass backsplash. The kitchen island features a marble waterfall-edge countertop, stainless steel cabinetry, and hidden storage.

Stroub Construction remodeled the brick garage of the mansion at 3001 Pacific Avenue, with work costing an estimated $700,000. The remodel required the demolition of part of the original brick masonry in order to reinforce and enhance the remaining 1906 architecture. When 3524 Jackson Street came to market it was one of the priciest listings in San Francisco. After it sold for $12.5M, Stroub Construction were brought in to do major remodeling on the 5,520 square-foot home. The work included relocating the solarium and skylights, remodeling the kitchen, three full baths, and a half-bath. Since the remodels, the estimated value of the home has increased by over $5M. Between 2013 and 2016, Stroub Construction carried out a number of remodels at 2636 Vallejo Street. After upgrading the foundation and installing an elevator from the garage up to the third story, the company also cut away part of the roof to extend a second-floor deck, and relocated the front entry steps.

Partnering with Butler Armsden Architects, Mueller Nicholls opened up the floor plan of a traditional Pacific Heights home by using steel moment frames and I-beams to replace the lower floor’s maze of rooms with an open concept kitchen and living area. Renovated access to the outdoors extended full use of the home to its newly renovated backyard. Also in Pacific Heights, but of a completely different style, Mueller Nicholls renovated a modern home with architects from Studio Urbis. The open-concept kitchen and living space is now replete with clean lines and sleek finishes. The contractor worked with Axial to Terminal, an Oakland-based custom metal fabrication company, to create a new fireplace surround, hearth, and firewood box. They also added recessed metal-clad shelving, set into flat-faced wood panel cabinetry and appliances. The backsplashes utilized the same metal, but with a patina finish, creating a strong textural complement to concrete countertops.

Amber-Tru Construction was trusted with renovations to one of the most iconic San Francisco residences, the Italianate Victorian building featured on Full House. The three-bedroom, three-bathroom house at 1709 Broderick Street is photographed by hundreds of fans daily. The show’s creator purchased the house for $4M in 2016 and began work with Amber-Tru construction to preserve the original 1883 architecture, while harkening back to some of the exterior design elements portrayed in the show. They also gave the original brick foundation a seismic retrofit, ensuring the 2,484 square-foot property would have a lasting presence in the Lower Pacific Heights neighborhood. The company was also tasked with remodeling the kitchen and bathrooms. At 914 Sanchez Street in Noe Valley, Amber-Tru Construction remodeled the bathroom and garage of a 1910 multiple-occupancy home. The building, with its 1,848 square feet of living space, is valued at over $2.7M.

The owners of a four-story Pacific Heights home enlisted Saturn Construction to bring character and warmth to their contemporary space. Following designs from Orlando-Diaz Ascuy Design Associates, the contractor replaced carpeting with wenge flooring and resurfaced all of the existing hardwood. The company also installed custom lighting, such as a recessed color-changing fixture above a living room alcove. New paint, fabric walls, and refinished stone work completed the textural melange. Saturn Construction completed a period remodel of a Victorian kitchen with designs from ChrDAUER Architects. The homeowners wanted to modernize the space without eliminating the traditional details of the Eastlake-style structure. The enclosed L-shaped kitchen received all new cabinetry with an integrated pantry, wine cabinet, and breakfast bar. The contractor also added vintage light fixtures, a ceramic farmhouse sink, a subway tile backsplash, and marble countertops.

Kevin Webb of Webb Construction began his career as a carpenter in San Francisco in the 1980s. For the last 30 years, Webb has led the company in renovations of historical residences and the construction of multi-unit buildings. At 3840 Clay Street, Webb Construction completed an exterior remodel on a century-old Presidio Heights home with an original 1900 facade that was in need of extensive restoration. With Charlie Barnett Associates, Webb Construction created custom handmade details to match the original architectural elements. The contractor also removed stucco that had been added to the building’s facade in the 1930s, further restoring the turn-of-the-century character and beauty. Challenging original barrel dormers were successfully remodeled, and matching the original woodwork was the last touch to restoring the facade. To replace the facade of the three-unit building at 1831 Grant Avenue, Webb Construction worked with Studio Vara architects. The owner believed the Russian Hill building lacked curb appeal with its 1960s finishes. Webb Construction replaced all of the existing windows with aluminum windows and recessed them into the facade. The street-facing fire escapes were wrapped in black steel cladding, and the addition of a roof overhang and a fresh coat of paint completed the modern rehab.

Ryan Associates collaborated with Walker Warner Architects to renovate a 1961 William Wurster residence in Pacific Heights. The remodel was aimed at updating the interior, improving the home’s energy efficiency, and playing up the characteristics central to the Wurster design. Additional wood-framed windows facing into the courtyard helped to merge the indoor and outdoor spaces. Ryan Associates also teamed with Geddes Ulinskas Architects to breathe life into an open-plan penthouse in SoMa. The brand new construction was bare and the owner was looking for a space that was comfortable for entertaining family, but that also featured high-end touches suitable for taking client meetings at home. The remodel brought in translucent finishes that don’t distract from the sweeping views. A glass and bronze fireplace between the living and dining areas defines each space. Wide-plank floors throughout bring the entire penthouse together. The master bath features a concrete soaking tub and Taj Mahal satin stone flooring.

Forde Mazzola created a beach-style space in a San Francisco open-concept kitchen remodel. The u-shaped kitchen features white shaker cabinets and a subway tile backsplash. Stainless steel appliances form double doors that lead to a walk-in pantry, while ceramic tile floors and a live-edge wood bar top bring warmth to the kitchen. Forde Mazzola sourced the wood for the bar from the client’s own backyard. The contractor remodeled the basement of the corner-lot home at 2845 Lake Street. Renovations to the Sea Cliff residence included dropping the basement floor to increase ceiling height and adding a media room, a bedroom, and a bathroom. Forde Mazzola worked with architect Andrew Skurman to remodel a Beaux Arts condominium in Nob Hill. The original 1914 architectural features were preserved while the home was upgraded with reclaimed oak, inlaid marble flooring, a gold-foiled ceiling, and lacquered walls.
