Summary: Our experience with this company was terrible. Even if they are the only company your warranty company will pay for, I would still recommend going out of pocket. You’ll save more money in both the short and long run.
The longer story: We bought a ten-year-old house in September of 2018. During a cold spell, our heat pump was making a lot of noise, and it was frosting over more than seemed normal. The previous owners got us a one-year warranty with American Home Shield, so we put in a service request, paid $75.00, and they sent A-Advanced Heating and Air Conditioning. I'll post a longer description of what happened next on other sites (it goes longer than Yelp allows) but A-Advanced insisted I needed new units, which they would cost me thousands, and they would not make any smaller fixes. They outright lied to me about the work they claimed to have done (I have documentation of this, in both their work orders and in texts between myself and the technician) and when I gave pushback on this, the technician shouted at me over the phone, not letting me get a word in edgewise, nor offering solutions. I called another company for a second opinion, and they patiently went step-by-step through how A-Advanced either differed in opinion or was outright wrong, and quoted me a much lower price to make a fix that would keep the house heated and cooled for the foreseeable future.
To make clear: I don’t think this is a scam. I think that the warranty company incentivizes companies to pick the most expensive solution because that feels like a win/win for customers. I could have all new units and someone else would pick up a portion of the cost. That’s not going to be the case when the warranty expires. The functional equivalent is that I have a flat tire and my mechanic says he can fix it and charge insurance, but only if I also let him replace all the parts of my engine. If I have a car long enough, I will need to replace all the parts of my engine, but if my engine is running, and I don’t have the thousands to fix it, then simply fixing the flat tire will keep me on the road. Only here, the mechanic lies, saying he fixed my tire and didn’t.
Until there was any pushback on them getting to charge me for all of the work they wanted to do, this company was perfectly pleasant. But the other company made a compelling case for why that work was not done, why the major changes they wanted to make were not necessary, and what the prognosis was for our HVAC going forward. Once there was any pushback, A-Advanced offered no solutions, continued to lie, and shouted at me over the phone. A-Advanced managed to make a situation worse without needing to, and dealing with them once I wasn’t agreeing with everything they said was outright hostile. Personally, I would like the $75 back, seeing as how they did nothing to alleviate any of the problem, and I would otherwise like to have no contact with A-Advanced going forward. There are only better alternatives.
