ABILENE COMFORT & REFRIGERATION was sent to my house after requesting my HVAC ducts inspected due to having observed the 1972 insulation was deteriorating (around the ducts). I believed this to be the reason my living room was becoming harder to heat and cool. A technician arrived only one day after my request and I again explained my concerns. He then used his thermal scanner and told me the walls in my living room had very little insulation in them. Looked at the HVAC system and told me he did not know why whoever installed it did it the way they did. He went outside and looked at the compressor, then came inside and stood on a 3-foot ladder peeked his head in the attic access and used the light of his phone to look at my duct work. He mentioned that the duct closest to his view was partially restricted by a board. Without going in to the attic more then from the neck up he concluded that I needed a bigger HVAC system to properly cool my home. I told him I requested to have my ducts repaired not a new HVAC system installed. He explained that it would not matter if he replaced my ducts that the HVAC system was too small to push the air. He further explained that my 3.5-ton HVAC system needed to be at least a 4-ton system. He said he would call my home warranty and tell them my system needed to be replaced and would call me an let me know what they said. I told him I did not believe my home warranty would cover a replacement that I just wanted my ducts fixed or replaced. He said you never know, let’s see what they say. After not calling back as he said he would do, I called him and he told me that my home warranty denied the upgrade. I asked him what about my ducts and he again told me it was denied. I asked him if I was just out of luck with my $100, I paid and he told me I should ask my home warranty. Now I am not satisfied with this, but said I would call my home warranty. They told me he requested an upgrade to my HVAC unit and nothing about fixing or replacing the duct work and they do not cover upgrades. I requested another company and they are sending one. I then do a little fact checking and discover that my house is 1,582 square feet and that the recommended HVAC system is a 3-ton system (1500-2000 sqft). I have a 3.5-ton? On a personal note: the ABILENE COMFORT & REFRIGERATION technician appeared to me to have a I don’t want to be here attitude, and when he realized the limited crawlspace in my attic it only amplified his “I do not care attitude”.
