Academy Roofing was contracted to put a new roof on my house in 2015/2016 timeframe. This roof came with a 10 year warranty on workmanship. Academy Roofing removed the old roof and installed a new roof of architectural shingles with a 30 year life. Academy Roofing forgot to install a boot to a roof vent. I became aware of this at the end of March 2021 when I went into my bathroom and water was running down the wall. The water running down the wall was my first notice of an issue. I immediately called Academy roofing and they sent someone over to tarp the area around the vent without a boot and they confirmed that the boot was missing from the roof vent. You could see daylight around the vent in the decking and roof. The next week they came over and put a boot on the vent and made sure that all vents were correct. Academy agreed to take care of the painting of the wall and sent their employee over to do the work. The paint was cracking after application as it dried and the painter had to come back. During that second appointment it was noticed that there was a buckle to bead board located on the wall that had water running down it at the end of March 2021. Academy roofing agreed to take care of that damage. Academy Roofing's employee came back to complete the repainting and beadboard repair. They cut the wall to replace the beadboard and found mold. Academy roofing sent over a manager to look at the damage and then sent over a "remediation specialist" with Archer Restoration Services (they have a 2.0 on Yelp). The "remediation specialist" determined, erroneously, that all the damage was due to the iron vent pipe experiencing condensation (which it wasn't. The vent pipe was dry when it was inspected and has remained dry every since). This "remediation specialist" also didn't seem to understand that the vent pipe only carried air. This also made no sense since the water running down the wall occurred because there wasn't a boot on a roof vent for 5+ years. Then Academy turned it over to their insurance company that was in place during the 2015/2016 installation. Specifically, Accident Insurance Company. This insurance company is now insolvent and was acquired by another insurance company. This company refused the claim stating that their adjuster determined that all of the damage and mold was due to one torrential rain at the end of March 2021, when the water ran down the wall. So they turned it into their insurance company that has their policy for this year, 2021. They, Next Insurance, denied the claim because the damage is from a boot not being installed on the vent during the roof installation in 2015/2016. Now Academy Roofing, through their insurance agency (Cherokee Insurance Center, Agent David Cook) is saying that they don't think that they are liable, even though the independent adjuster hired by Accident Insurance Company says that the cause is the lack of a vent boot during a torrential rain caused the damage. So, even though I have a 10 warranty on workmanship from Academy Roofing and they had liability insurance, Academy Roofing and their insurance company won't pay for the damage caused by their negligence during the installation of the roof. Don't do business with this company. The owner of Academy Roofing, Stephen McGrew, seems to not know the difference between coverage and liability. They are hiding behind insurance and their insurance is a muddled mess. Additionally, they initially accepted liability when they agreed to fix the paint and bead board but then said that they aren't liable because the damage was more extensive than they thought. The size of the damage doesn't negate liability or change Academy Roofs determination that they were liable. It's kind of insane. Oh, and they left me with a hole in my wall where they removed the bead board for repair. ACADEMY ROOFING WILL NOT STAND BEHIND THEIR 10 YEAR WARRANTY.
