Just say No so you don't get ripped off. There are lots of other electricians out there. Call any of them except this one. Unbelievable lack of ethics is what I experienced. Initially I was told the owner, Kent Zimmerman, would call me to discuss the extreme overbilling issues. He never called. When I followed up, I was told he refuses to discuss the matter with me. So then your options are to file a complaint with the Oregon CCB (in progress) and write a review to warn others of their shady practices.
We received 4 verbal quotes from 4 different Access Electrical employees stating that it would take ONE electrician 1.5 - 2 hours to put an outlet in a master bathroom. The journeyman rate they charge of $130 means that total labor for this job (at 2 hours) would be $260. Parts were additional and should be nominal.
Long story short, they charged over $1000 for the job, made all kinds of false claims: such as, the homeowner was not home while the work was done, yet the electricians claimed the homeowner was there and requested additional electrical work while on site - which never happened; Mike Potter, the company manager, claims it is normal industry practice to pad the time on their billing (despite having ring camera evidence showing arrival and departure times); Mike Potter also claimed it is normal to send an extra unauthorized and undisclosed apprentice electrician along to “watch a wire come down the wall” and then he demands you pay for this electrician’s entire padded time as well; and it goes on and on and on and on.
The company was also 1.5 hours late to the job, even while charging an unbelievable extra 6 hours over the max quoted project time.
Michelle in billing told me that the owner, Kent Zimmerman, would call me to discuss it the next day. He never called. They sent another invoice, reduced only by $400 total, which still represents a GROSS OVERBILLING on the quoted time. I responded and mentioned that the owner did not reach out to discuss as planned, and I would like to receive a call from him to discuss.
Here is Michelle’s reply:
“The Owner Kent has given his discount on the invoice I sent you and will not be calling you. Mike Potter explained in detail what the workers did on the job. We will not be spending anymore time explaining or calling in regard to this matter.
Sincerely,
Michelle @ Access Electric LLC”
Now they will have to explain it to the Oregon CCB.
So unless you want to have money taken from you unexpectedly, with gross overbilling, padding of bills, padding of time, false claims of work performed which was never performed, extra electrician(s) sent without authorization to stand and watch a line drop in the wall, hear from some guy named Mike Potter that just keeps making up lies as he goes, etc. with no recourse, and an owner that refuses to discuss it, do not waste your time with them.
If you do find yourself in this unfortunate situation, be sure to share your experience on rating sites and file a complaint with the Oregon Construction Contractors Board (CCB).
