BH
Bob Hagen
I contracted through Lowes, Paseo Del Norte location in Albuquerque, an emergency replacement of our dysfunctional gas hot water heater. A plumber from All Hours Plumbing (alias AHP) came to our home the next day and proceeded to specify $700 in additional plumbing problems claimed to be code violations that "must be fixed if we are to complete this installation." I was out of town and all discussions took place by phone. Included in the $700 demand were removal of an abandoned gas line behind the existing water heater (no longer hooked to anything), extension of the gas piping to allow a shorter flex line, replacement of the gas shutoff valve said to be "out of date," relocation of the drip tube because "it doesn't look right," and similar numbers of issues with water lines and the T&P relief valve. Upon questioning the surprising list of proposed work all items were said by the AHP plumber to be code violations, yet upon further challenge each issue was loosely defended with what sounded very suspiciously like personal opinions or bogus statements of the code violated. When I declined the work item by item, the plumber hung up on me and departed the job. A few hours later a representative of New Mexico Gas Company, the local natural gas vendor, inspected the gas supply lines and said all was in good order and met all codes. The NMGC rep offered to remove the abandoned line for free on the spot, but assured us there was no violation. AHP appears to this customer to be unethical, ready to take full advantage of an out of town customer caught with no hot water back home. Avoid this company.
