I had him look at my project, which was a new walkway and artificial turf for the front yard. He asked me what I wanted to pay, one red flag, I told him and he said "okay", didn't say can't do for that amount which is what I expected, I came in low, but he wanted to start that day, 2nd red flag. Should have gone with my gut and said no thank you, so some of it was my fault and a good lesson for me. They came for a few days and stopped for a few, I asked when they were going to start again. Said he was sick or something. Came back a few days later, did the brick work on the walkway, did do a nice job on that, but that was it, never came back to put the turf in, left it at the gravel stage with no underlayment for weeds. He got 95% of the money, and I got half the work done. Called him for a week, never returned my calls or texts. I made my checks out to Finau Palu. He went by Ray but I think his real name was Finau Palu, or Alani Pahulu not really sure, as Ray never gave me his last name. I did find another report on Finau Palu for just about the identical situation, I have posted it here just so people will be aware that this is just not AKP Constuction but Finau Palu.
Second ripoff below:
Picked Artistic Concrete out of yellow pages to bid on sidewalk and driveway demolition and replacement job. Finau was persuasive, charming and persistent. I awarded him the job based on price and promised scope of work.
The crew started the job rapidly (the day after I awarded it). Finau was quite efficient about asking for progress payments which I paid. He also asked me to pay for the cement and bricks myself, which I also did, crediting them against job cost.
Bricklaying part of job got pretty slow; crew would miss a day without explanation, then 2, then come back for a couple days straight etc. Progress payments + what I spent on cement and bricks were up to about 95% of bid total, and job still needed most of edge bricks to be cut and fitted when they just stopped coming. I waited a couple of weeks, he wouldn't return any phone calls and he hung up on me once.
Finally I juist gave up and hired another contractor for $1200 to get job done.
