Constructive Criticism
1.) Do not lie to the customer over the phone. Customer does have a copy of the bid.
2.) Original bid paperwork had wrong model and it was passed off as a simple mistake. Jimmy wrote in his notebook the two-stage model. This by it self would have had the benefit of doubt. But Jimmy without consulting the customer changed the 100,000 btu furnace to an 80,000 furnace. Howard Heating and Home Heating (Belgrade) both stated the rated 80% furnace---100,000 btu. Due to 20 percent up the chimney and very poor doors, windows, and insulation was their reasoning for the higher rated furnace. Jimmy needs to learn to consult with the customer and to do the actual heat calculations before trying to save money on Ambient's bottom line.
Because of Jimmy, I have only 63,000 btu entering the ducts. A two stage furnace with the 100,000 btu rating would of been perfect. Mostly running in the first stage minus chimney loss and poor insulation; the house would be comfortable for most of Montana winters with the extra kick if the 2nd stage was needed.
I gave Jimmy two chances to explain after the fact for changing furnace size, his explanation was the PSC motor only came in the 80,000 btu size. Before I gave Jimmy his chances to redeem himself, I contacted Johnstone, their instruction was that either of the two distributors for Montana could of ordered the PSC 100,000 model. The model that I wanted was available.
3.) Nicholas needs a reprimand. He took it upon himself to move the furnace to a different location and the only reason I did not make him move it back was that I am not sure if my father is going to survive long enough to need a wheel chair ramp. I did not care if he had went the other direction. But in trying to do the job with the least amount of labor and material to please his bosses, sometimes backfires. 2nd mistake is jamming the AC lines between the AC access panel and the exhaust pipe. This creates problems for general maintaince check-up of the evaporator coil and the pan. 3rd problem: his bracket for securing the exhaust pipe to the hood was too short--he put a kink in the exhaust connection (both ends) to secure the exhaust pipe. Metal expands and contracts---this may be a future probem. 4th problem: his condensate line with a vent is nothing more than mini-jet stream register. I can not find one diagram or picture to support this setup. My main problem---Did Nick take any other shortcuts or unexlainable procedures???
4.) Brandon is just learning but he is learning to lie to the customer. Not a big lie, but it is the step, towards thinking it is acceptable, to lie to a customer. Both Jimmy and Nick had a problem with where I wanted the outside AC unit. I took three times before they got it right. Brandon did an excellent job the first time and an excellent job the final time on leveling. I saw Brandon leave the garage area with the level, after both employees left I started checking on thier work. Next morning I took time off from work to make sure Brandon went back and did the job right. His answer was it was only temporary. For temp work you do not need the level and you do not need to stuff grass under the edges to make it appear level.
Final thoughts: Mostly because of Jimmy and Nick will my furnace be enough if we have a severe winter and will the 2nd stage of the furnace work correctly. Your business needs to work on keeping a customer confident in your people's work ethics.
