Unfortunately my experience was terrible and after months without completed plans, I felt I had no choice but to fire Bruce. My wife and I handed Bruce a nearly completed layout so we did not expect to lose time in the design stage. However Bruce spent some weeks creating a layout with very minor changes; however we had already tried that layout and told him we did not like it. The real issue was not only delays, but also mistakes. As a layman, I was able to notice quit a few problems in the demolation, construction and mechanical plans. If I pointed out 5 problems to him, he would say "number 3 is actually ok" or something to that effect. In the next turn he would usually not correct all the problems, creating more turns of the file. I was concerned enough that I had to get other professionals to review the drawings and they found what I would consider major problems. For instance, Bruce did not note that, per code, the garage floor needed to be raised when we enclosed. While this is any easy fix, it created issues with the bids from GCs..some assumed it was raised and some didn't, creating an apples to oranges issue when I was trying to compare bids. There were a few items like this making selecting a GC difficult. The WORST of the issues was that Bruce did not inspect the house structure (e.g. he never looked in the attic) so he did not realize that a wall he marked for demolition was in fact a bearing wall. This could have caused injury or death if the demolition subcontractor did not notice. After much yelling I was finally able to get him to send an expert to my house (he tried to charge me extra for this even though in the contract it was his responsibility). Of course, this and many of the other issues would have created "change orders" during construction forcing me into cost overruns. Bruce never apologized for any problem but also didn't defend himself much either.
