Had a bad experience with Mr. Mao for an interior remodeling project that required city permit. Apparently Mr. Mao does not know the process to acquire the city permit, but he kept talking about he had experience in obtaining permits in Miami Beach, which was a complete lie. After 5 months, we went nowhere with the permit, he couldn't even get the category right on the DERM application, we need interior remodeling, but he put fire sprinkler in the category. Mr. Mao also said several times that he wants to drop the contract. When I saw no hope that he will ever get it done, I offered to pay for the architect plans and tried to get the remainder of my deposit back. That is when Mr. Mao turned ugly and insisted he should get paid plus all the surcharges incurred during the process due to his incompetence when nothing was done.
I am glad I decided to cut the loss and was able to find another contractor knows the process. I completely started from scratch with this new contractor, did not use the crappy plans Mr. Mao produced. Within two months, we got the permit done. So it wasn't that hard after all, but Mr. Mao described the city was worse than Miami Beach and impossible to work with. What made it impossible is you don't know what you are doing, Mr. Mao.
