Purchased a house in the summer of 2015 with a stipulation that the front and back porches would be painted by them. At the closing I was given a written estimate by them and cancelled check showing they were paid for "labor and materials." Said the job would be done in "mid-July". As soon as we closed I called and he said he was going away and booked through the summer. In late August he dropped off a color chart. I then touched base with him asking when we could proceed- he said he was waiting on us because we "couldn't decide on a color"- not the case. He then said he was booked most of that summer too.... Realizing he was a small operation, I told him the fall would be fine. In September he dropped off a contract that said he was only paid a certain amount when he was actually paid more. It also said he was paid for labor only and we had to pay for materials. Again not what was written on his estimate. We were very reasonable under the circumstances and after some unanswered e-mails and confusing replies we decided to just do one of the porches and call it even. I requested a contract and was shocked to see he was demanding another almost 700 DOLLARS FOR ESSENTIALLY HALF OF THE JOB. He again referenced part of the job that would cost more- that was quoted on his estimate. At this point I was disgusted. I figured it would be best to just seek a refund and explore other options. I requested he refund the money and I even said he could keep a little for his troubles. Amazingly he wrote back saying he would refund me half and keep the other half for "estimates and consultations " - dropping off a paint chart and a wrong contract. I told him this was unacceptable and he then said that he can't refund me because I didn't pay him, the previous owners did ( but it was ok when he was going to keep half). The work being done or paid for was a stipulation of the closing. He didn't spend 1 minute of work and 1 penny on materials!!! Now he's not returning my e-mails. Ridiculous! STAY AWAY......
