CARELESS & RUDE, UNINSURED, NO CONTRACTS!
NATURE LOVERS BEWARE!
I requested an estimate for taking down a cluster of ailanthus trees and chipping three piles of recently cut honeysuckle bushes. I received an estimate and agreed to the price. He said he'd be back in a couple of weeks.
This is where everything went wrong.
My property is a registered wildlife habitat and part of the Homegrown National Park program. I have been working diligently and gently for many months to remove invasive trees, shrubs, vines, and plants from a woodland section of my property while nurturing the native gems that were hidden among them. The work was nearly finished with the exception of some honeysuckle roots that I still needed to dig out and I required professional help to remove the invasive trees.
I had tagged many of the native trees and plants in the area, some with names and others with color-coded tags to remind me to find out more about them. Newly planted blueberries, herbs, and wildflowers surrounded a nearby rocky area marked with decorative stakes. A bird feeding station hovered on the hill above it all. Paths meandered throughout the area.
WE DID NOT HAVE A CONTRACT OR SCHEDULED DATE.
Nearly two months after I received the estimate, I came home for lunch and found the entire natural area had been toppled and scraped down to the dirt! More than a dozen mature native trees (redbuds, red mulberry, black cherry, and black haw) were destroyed along with several young Northern Spicebushes and the entire wildflower area. The rocky herb garden and been trampled and covered in debris. The nearby lawn displayed deep oily ruts from an unnecessary piece of equipment that had broken down. A seasoned brush pile was gone and one of the honeysuckle piles remained.
MOST OF THE ORIGINAL TREES THAT WERE MEANT TO BE CUT ARE STILL STANDING AND MUCH OF THE DESTRUCTION IS ON MY NEIGHBOR'S PROPERTY.
I expressed my dismay and agreed to pay him if he would clean up the fallen trees and chip or remove the remaining honeysuckle pile. He complied and I paid him. After he left, I walked the area and realized that it would cost far more than I gave him to remove the toxic grass and do a minimal amount of restoration. I sent him this message:
"I stopped payment on those checks. I am devastated by the damage to my native plants and trees and it will cost thousands of dollars and take years to restore it. I understand that you have a crew to pay and other expenses and I want to work things out in a way that leaves us both satisfied. This problem is simply a misunderstanding and I don't want either of us to lose out."
HE RESPONDED IMMEDIATELY BY PHONE WITH CURSES AND THREATS AND FOLLOWED UP WITH ABOUT A DOZEN VOICE MESSAGES OF ADDITIONAL CURSING AND THREATS.
I released the checks and asked for contact information for his insurance company. Tree Man did not respond so I must conclude that HE IS UNINSURED.
Many of my friends have used Artistic Tree and Landscape and were pleased with the results but the company has recently shifted their focus to excavating and has no regard for nature, no insurance, and abundant anger issues.
