I recently had an asphalt job done by Asphalt Today. Although they claim to be a five star-rated company, the job was not 5 star. Below, is a list of items that are unacceptable.
Estimate and Agreements
The job was discussed on the same morning that work began, November 2, 2022. Two foremen were present and participated in the discussion of price estimate and scope. A load of topsoil and grading was to be included in the quoted price of $12,000. Since the company was considered to be reputable, the owner proceeded with the job with only a verbal agreement (big mistake). No written agreement was presented until the evening of 2 November when the crew considered the job to be complete.
When topsoil was needed, the foremen shared responsibility in obtaining a quote for the topsoil and requested an additional $2,000. The owner had no choice but to pay the additional amount since the job needed to be completed.
Grading
Grading involved excavation of existing crushed stone and sand which was to be used for part of the base in addition to other crushed stone to be brought in. Although agreed at the start, it required 3 additional interruptions and reminders to do it as agreed.
Grading apparently required longer than planned since the asphalt sat in the truck on the street for several hours.
Site Cleanup
When the paving was completed on 2 November, the adjacent lawn was riddled with ruts from the Bobcat. The owner was asked to pay for the job which would have meant that any subsequent site cleanup, as specified in the contract, would never have occurred.
The site required an additional load of topsoil to fill ruts and to grade up to the asphalt edge in some places. The additional load and cleanup was provided after complete payment was refused. The cleanup was completed on 3 November at no additional cost and payment was made. Some, but not all of the filled ruts are shown in pictures 1 & 2.
A large piece of buried curb was discovered during the excavation. The curb was broken into pieces and most was removed gratis (much appreciated). However, one large piece of curb was dumped in the graded area which will be seeded. It had to be broken and removed by the owner (see picture 3).
Rolling and Surface Quality
After initial rolling, several uneven areas remained. The owner pointed out the large ones. Asphalt was added and rolled leaving scab-like patches on the surface (see pictures 2 & 4).
After final rolling, various small ridges remain on the final surface (see pictures 1 & 2).
The roller stalled and seemed to be running erratically during rolling which may have led to the poor quality final rolled surface.
Job Quality
Overall, this is a poor quality job and I would not recommend the company.
