I called Best Choice Total Home Improvement two years ago for a free estimate on a new roof. The salesman and I talked about different options and I remember deciding on getting a ridge vent. I called back a year later to accept the proposal, but the proposal was never updated to reflect my interest in the ridge vent. The only change made to the proposal sheet that their salesman gave me two years ago was the date and the amount. I never received any other paperwork that stated what they were or were not going to do.
The project was scheduled during a thunderstorm, so the crew rushed and shingled over holes they somehow put in my sheathing. They never covered my brand new A/C condenser unit and were throwing the old shingles on top of the refrigeration and electrical lines. They ripped the leaf guard off my gutters for some reason, destroying some of them as they tossed them to the ground while they were ripping the old shingles off. They ran their gas-powered air compressor on top of my brand new paver sidewalk which dripped oil all over it. They damaged my gutter by dropping their garbage cans on top of it while dumping their trash in the dumpster that was in front of my garage door. They intentionally pried the plywood off the fascia board and stuffed a piece of drip edge under the shingles to create a vent into the attic above my garage because they knew there were no vents in the soffits. This created a noticeable bump on the roof and water began leaking into my garage. I called to have these issues investigated and they first sent out their siding contractor to fix it by pounding on the bump with a hammer for about an hour. They finally sent the roofer back out who ripped the shingles back to expose the lifted plywood. I took a picture of it and was told it was fixed by tearing off a couple of layers of the plywood to "help bevel out the hump."
They altered my roof by cutting in a ridge vent and blocked off the gable vents at both ends of the house without adding any soffit vents. The soffits around my garage never had vents cut into them, so my attic became soaking wet and full of mold after 5 months of being without proper ventilation. I contacted the owners of the company who told me the problem was due to me heating my garage, despite the fact that it's drywalled and insulated, rather than the fact that they failed to cut out the soffit vents.
After proving to Best Choice Total Home Improvement that there was never any vents cut into my soffits, they began telling me that cutting out soffit vents was not their job. According to the manufacturer of the shingles they used on my house, they were supposed to properly install the shingles, which includes ensuring a balanced airflow in the attic. Best Choice Total Home Improvement failed to do this and refused to correct it.
I told Leon, one of the owners of Best Choice, that I was planning on having my township inspector come out to look at my roof. He told me that he spoke with the inspector prior to coming to my house and that he could almost get him fired for looking at my attic. I suspect he must have bribed him to give the report that he did because he never went into the attic nor did he go up on the roof to inspect anything. He only poked his head up though the access door and told me what the owner of Best Choice was telling me, that the problem was me heating my garage. I then hired another independent licensed inspector who was at my house for three hours taking pictures and inspecting both sides of the roof. This inspector came up with several issues which Best Choice refused to address. Despite many attempts at trying to get them to come back out to do anything, they never did and it cost me almost $3,000 to hire another contractor to repair the damages caused by their neglect and to finish the job I hired Best Choice Total Home Improvement to do.
