Horrific experience with the business owner.
Robert Cote and Curtis Cote and Cinny Lor from Better Home Improvement. 1. Despite what was clearly requested and promised during initial engagement, they started the deck construction without getting a permit. To make things even worse, they lied to us by saying they applied the permit and it was in the mail.
2. They took $1520 from us to custom order two skylights. They screwed up on the size and canceled the order but never returned the money back to us.
3. Contract clearly stated 28' wide roof, they built it with only 24' .
4. Shoddy workmanship. Very low quality, does not pay attention to details. . Metal , siding, joists, The tolerance is just too high.
5. Stringers were badly installed, that is when we noticed and started looking into the building code. It was clear that what they built did not comply. Later we found out that they did not apply for a permit. Inspector told me they could tear the whole thing down which would result in big loss $$$ for us.
6. Delay, delay, and further delay. They made up all the excuses not to come to finish the job. The car, the errands, the weather, the kids, etc.. promise a date, and delay again and again.
7. When they do come, they always demand more money.
8. This is our first time doing such project and dealing directly with contractors. We are too naive to give them all money upfront every time Rob asked.
Then I called the HIC, HIC told me that they owe HIC several thousand dollars for past complaint and that is probably the reason they lost their license, they had to ask Cinny Lor to get a license to cover for them. And we have never seen or talked to the license owner.
They may appear nice when they are asking your project, but be warned, you will be sorry into the project since they know a lot of tricks. We want to let you know of our experience so you don't have to go through the same pain process that we are going through right now. Money is one thing, time and headache is another.
