Who We Are
Rick and Lin have lived in Chattanooga for more than 18 years. We have three children and six grandchildren.

Rick’s wife Lin provides complimentary design services to all of our customers. This service includes everything from choosing paint colors, sink styles, custom trim moldings, plumbing fixtures, & lighting.

As a hands on builder; Rick is personally involved in all aspects of every home from design to finish, preferring to maintain total control over every project. In order to do this, Rick is on site every day. "I take a personal interest and extreme pride in every home I build".

We take pride in being able to say, “We Built that Home!” Future homeowners can discuss ideas directly with Rick; there are no project managers or other go-betweens, so the service is direct and personal.


Background
More than forty years ago a young man smashed his thumb with a hammer working at his grandfather's lake house. While bandaging the young man's thumb the grandfather joked with his grandson, "You don't have to put so much of yourself into the building". I am that grandson, and today I still put a piece of myself into every home.

My uncle actually got me started in the business. He built and developed many commercial hotels, apartment complexes and restaurants in Alabama and Florida.

Later with my studies in engineering at Auburn University and finance at the University of Tennessee Chattanooga, I spent many years in the engineering and construction management trade building hospitals, high rise condominiums, football stadiums, nuclear power plants, oil refineries, water treatment plants and landfills.

    $350,000

    I am currently using this builder to build a new home. The builder has missed multiple delivery deadlines since March 2022. The home is mostly complete but requires a list of items that the builder is either unable or unwilling to complete. The builder’s site foreman is hostile, evasive, condescending, and unwilling to offer satisfactory answers or just unwilling to answer questions at all about what is being done to get to a satisfactory delivery. The builder has also caused material damage to the hardwood flooring that he is refusing to remedy. I would like to take delivery even with a remaining punch list if the house is able to be occupied but would withhold a final draw until the punchlist items are completed. The builder refuses and is causing me to incur additional costs for temporary living arrangements. The builder is trying to pressure me to make final payment even when the home is not completed with no remaining remedy.

    We have purchased two homes from Rick and Big Whiskey Land & Cattle Co. Our first house in Ooltewah, was already framed when we went under contract. Rick and his wife, Lin, walked us through all the steps while finishing our beautiful home. We later decided to move closer to downtown Chattanooga and immediately called Rick again. He helped us find and secure a beautiful lot, overlooking the Tennessee River, and built our dream home. Rick is a very good listener and also gives great advice. Our home was also built very efficiently, which made our power bill half the price of homes our same size. I highly recommend Rick Harris and Big Whiskey Land & Cattle Co.

    A great builder to work with!

    My wife Pat and I could not be any happier that we picked Rick Harris and his Big Whiskey team to build our house. We already owned a lot in a very developed neighborhood, so the challenge was to pick a house that would fit in and work with a lot that had mature trees. Rick had great ideas, and we worked together to put a great plan together.
    The building process only took about 9 months, and we had a chance to put a lot of our own ideas into every square foot of the finished product. Rick went beyond the call of duty to find the siding that we had seen on a few houses. We really liked it, but it was not common in our community. Rick figured our what it was and found a good source to get it for us.
    I cannot say enough about the quality of the finished product, and how we had great two way communication during the building process. Rick looked out for our budget when we had ideas that were impractically expensive, and he also found some ways do extras that we still appreciate every day. Overall, I would highly recommend Rick and Big Whiskey to build your house.

    We chose Rick Harris and Big Whiskey Builders to handle our Kitchen remodel. The craftsmanship and professionalism in which the project was completed was terrific. We were so impressed and satisfied that when it was time to refinish the lower level of our home we made just one call to Big Whiskey Builders. If you are looking for a contractor who delivers on his promises Rick should be your choice.
