Although we chose this builder because the owner said they are familiar with eco-friendly/green building practices and could work within our budget requirements, we found this not to be our experience. We did not ever waiver from what we initially discussed, in detail, including 2500 to just under 3k sq ft, radiant floor heating, active and passive solar and all hardwood (no carpeting due to asthma/allergy concerns). We discussed budget and do understand that building costs had been increasing due to the demand expansion in our area.....but we felt blindsided by the $140k over budget costs which did not even include the mechanical design (solar, radiant). We felt very disrespected by the builder blaming us for the over budget costs when we never deviated from our original plan. We hadn’t even gotten into our supposed requested “upgrades” the builder claimed were the reasons our costs were so much higher than we had originally discussed. The over budget costs were due to tripling builder costs and an unfamiliarity with knowledgeable competitive green building/mechanical contractors as well as a failure in communicating actual pricing. We wasted time and energy and are very disappointed in the builder’s unwillingness to provide us with a CAD file (dwg or dxf) but simply blowing us off with a virtually useless pdf file. We paid 6k for their “design services” and this was the end result. Not happy!
