I called Blue Bear Plumbing to fix a leak under kitchen sink. I requested that the Plumber wear a mask and the receptionist said it was their policy to have all workers wear a mask in order to protect the public and their workers. I asked for a cost estimate to fix either a leaking pie or a leaking garbage disposal and I was told every project is completely different therefore only a plumber can give me a price. They would not give me even a ballpark or an hourly rate, since they officially charge by project, not by the hour. I tried to say do you know if it is going to be $100, $200, $300 plus material but I was still told , she can’t tell. I paid a deposit for the plumber to come. At that point my main priority was to get a good job as soon as possible rather than to try to save a few dollars.
Anthony the plumber came and determined that the garbage disposal needed to be replaced. He quoted me $618 (yes six hundred and eighteen dollars!) for labor and material. Trying to find a more cost-effective solution, I for a quote to just remove the device and put pipes so that I will have a plain regular sink. Anthony said it would be more expensive ($720) since it would be much more labor intensive and time consuming. He claimed that all the pipes would have to be replaced, including the ones in the cupboard next to the sink if I was to restore a plain sink. When asked why he was charging so much, he said his price included the best garbage disposal on the market and that the company charges a standard flat fee of $618 to replace (not a new installation, just a replacement) of any garbage disposal and he could not do anything better. Yet the receptionist had told me they price case by case based on work to be done. No talk of a standard flat fee before I signed on the dotted line.
While not thrilled by the price, my objective was to get the issue properly fixed at the earliest opportunity. Assuming I was getting the best unit, I signed on his iPad that I was agreeing to the job. Then , Anthony went to his truck and brough a box that said Badger. I told him I never heard of that name. He said it was the best, it was an Insinkerator. He claimed his company works only with the best. By subsequently googling the Badger 5, the retail price was only $55. The cheapest on the market, not the best like I had been told before signing or while he started work. After working 15-20 minutes he said he was done, yet he did not replace the sink flange or the sink baffle. I asked him to do it, and he refused saying the old ones were fine.
Since I was supposed to get a new device, I demanded to have those parts replaced. There was no justification whatsoever to have ten-year-old parts from one brand name being used with a new device, when I was paying for a complete job.
Anthony then had the audacity to tell me that no garbage disposal whatsoever comes nowadays with a sink flange or baffle and that he did not have the parts. To me this was a blatant insulting lie. Even if I new nothing about plumbing, it was obvious that no company would sell a garbage disposal without those parts, since it could not be installed without those parts! I just took the manufacturer pamphlet showed him that those pieces were part of the equipment supposedly in the box.
Stopper, sink flange and sink baffles are the three items that this plumber claimed no garbage disposal comes with anymore, just so that on top of overcharging he could cut corners. He was embarrassed and upset, told me my box did not come with any. I asked if what he was selling me was really new, or maybe it was a returned item? Three pieces missing in the box? Really? He went going to his truck to get the piece. He came back and announced proudly that he “stole” a flange from another box (ten minutes earlier I was told that no manufacturer provides them anymore in the package. I saw him work under the sink to presumably replace the flange. I never saw him work inside the sink with silly putty or so. I had to keep my distance because of Covid. He went to his car and then came and asked me to sign for payment. When I saw that this was not just signing for payment but that there was a statement saying the work was completed to my full satisfactio , I told him I did not want to sign. He raised his voice and told me he would not leave unless I sign, since otherwise they can’t process the payment. I asked him for a paper copy, so that I could authorize the payment, but put some comments on the paper removing the “satisfaction statement” and he said he could not provide me with any paper copy and I had to sign on his iPad. He could not even email me on the spot what I signed since he said, first payment has to be processed before I get a receipt. So basically I was signing a document where I was ble only to see half an -

By A.p.April 17, 2019SMALL LEAK IN BATHROOM$660
Hire this plumbing firm if you like to be over charged! Contacted 4 other plumbing firms and their price for the same small repair was over $400 dollars less. Had me over a barrel had no choice, NEVER use them again.
Response from Blue Bear plumbing April 22, 2019Hi Arthur, we're sorry you feel this way. While we can empathize with you, we certainly did not "have you over a barrel. " We initially visited your address on a Saturday and we did not charge a fee for this visit as we wanted to save you the weekend/after hours call. As for the repair, we had to access your wall in which we opened the wall as clean and orderly as possible. We made a repair on your hot water line as well as offered and access panel to help until a permanent fix to your wall could be made. We also repaired your shower valve, which required additional parts. Luckily our service trucks carry many parts in order to allow us to make quick repairs without having to wait hours. Finally prior to ANY work beginning, you were presented with the options and a price, to which you fully agreed and signed for service. This problem had been ongoing as you had stated in the initial visit and was not an imminent hazard. If you truthfully did not like the price we would have gladly recinded any service, and for this reason we present each customer with a plan of action and a price. Hopefully this response finds you well, and please don't hesitate to reach out for any further service. Chris Murphy Owner Blue Bear Plumbing
