Permits

My husband and I received a quote from Boone Contracting on April 15 2019 on deck replacement for $16750.00 which we accepted. The owner, Jarrod Gabbard told my husband the work would start in two or three weeks so we handed him an $8300.00 check which he cashed immediately without issue. After 4 weeks of waiting to hear from Jarred, my husband finally started trying to contact him. The first red flag was unreturned phone calls and messages. When he finally called back he raised a second red flag when he told my husband that he underbid our project. After back and forth on how much time was going by he finally sent his "architect" out. The architect spoke to me at length about the condition of the existing deck which led me to believe he was under the impression that the deck was to be repaired instead of being rebuilt. The contract clearly states "demo existing deck/ dispose"" rebuild existing deck (upper/lower) to current dimensions with pressure treated lumber" etc. Two more weeks passed with no word from Mr. Gabbard so my husband attempted to contact him again to no avail. At that point we felt that we could no longer trust this company so my husband send Jarrod a message to cancel the job and return our $8300.00 deposit. Only then did Mr. Gabbard return the call. He acted surprised and told my husband that he was keeping $1300.00 for the "architects time" and that he would return the remaining balance after meeting with his accountant. A few days later my husband called him again to arrange a time to pick up the check and Mr Gabbard informed him that the check had been mailed out. That was last week and so we are still waiting for a check for $7000.00. After checking the mail today I attempted to call Mr Gabbard and he didn't answer so I left a message. An hour later I called again and it went straight to voicemail. My next recourse is to contact my attorney and the Department for Consumer Affairs. NO, I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS COMPANY!
