    Home Renovation

    My wife and I decided to get a renovation quote from Brandon based upon the great online reviews that he received, but I'm sorry to say that our experience was not as positive as what we hoped for. I should state upfront that we didn't actually hire Brandon to complete any renovations. We simply chose him over the quote that we received from another remodeler. From the start Brandon seemed very professional. He was flexible with the times that he would be available to come out to the house, and he kept up good communication through phone calls/text. Once at the home he provided good ideas for our renovation, and he reassured us that he was comfortable with the home renovation loan process/paperwork. We felt pretty good moving forward, and when we received our two quotes Brandon's stood out as being far more reasonable. We informed him right away that we decided to choose his services for our renovation and that we were looking forward to working with him. However, this was when our professional interaction with Brandon started to fall apart. We impressed upon him that due to the timeline of our renovation loan, and closing timeline, that he would need to submit a finalized estimate (in the lenders required format) ASAP. Brandon seemed to lose interest in our project at this point. He stopped answering our calls/texts and began dragging his feet. When he did respond to us it was often many hours or up to a day later. Even after our lenders renovation department reached out to him with exact instructions on the paperwork that he needed to submit he continued to push for more time. This all took place over the space of 4-5 days. He was literally the only thing holding up the appraisal process during this period, as our lender needs the renovation estimate prior to the appraisal. We tried everything to instill a sense of urgency with Brandon, but to no avail. The final straw came when we had no other choice but to put him on the spot and threatened to get a new contractor. We asked when EXACTLY he was going to submit the required estimate/paperwork, and he informed us (by text no less) that he wasn't going to be able to meet the deadline as he was going out of town. He said that he could complete the paperwork but he needed another 2-3 days!! We found all of this EXTREMEMLY unprofessional. His communication after we selected him as our contractor was very poor. He never informed us that he was leaving town, and thus couldn't finish the paperwork. He apparently lied to us when he said that he had done this type of renovation loan "many times" in the past because it turned out that he did not seem very knowledgeable about the process. He said, in his words, that there was a "ton of paperwork" that he didn't have time to finish and that he was "slammed finishing up two large jobs". Everything seemed to be an excuse with him. The excuses and the very poor communication were all large red flags that led us to drop Brandon. My advice to him would be to not take on more jobs than you can handle. My wife and I believe that he felt that he could just string us along because we had such a small job which was obviously a low priority to him. All good builders know that every job, no matter how small, is important. It's important because it effects your reputation as a builder and it effects the homeowners that are looking forward to updating their home. Now my wife and I are being forced to scramble to find another contractor, and we are scared that we may lose this house as the sellers now have to wait longer to close. Be aware of Brandon's communication faults before you use his services. If your job is too small or too complex you may end up having the same issues that we faced.
