By a user in RhinelanderDecember 14, 2017Repair and replace roof due to hail damageRead more
Brookens Construction was referred to me by a neighbor. We met with their salesperson Billy, who was very knowledgeable, but a salesperson nonetheless. We hired Brookens to repair damage to our roof, chimney and gutters from hail. From the beginning, Brookens would NOT provide an estimate, stating they had to repair the damage based on our insurance claim amount. When we met with Billy to discuss the work to be done and select shingle color, Billy phoned Aaron (the owner) and told us he would cover the cost of the gutters and see about providing us with a new central air conditioning unit. A construction company covering the cost of an central unit seemed 'odd' to my husband and I and everyone I spoke to. Three weeks after our initial meeting, and while we were on vacation, we received a phone call from Emily on our answering machine, aggressively letting us know a crew would be at our home the next day to start the repairs. There was no prior communication about scheduling an appointment, and when I phoned her back at 9am, I appeared to have gotten her out of bed. She was rude and very unprofessional. I operate a child care center out of my home, and it was crucial that I receive a Saturday appointment, and more than a half-days notice so that I could adequately prepare my yard, deck, etc. as well as give my clients proper notice. Billy assured me this information would be noted in the computer, but apparently Emily was not made aware. When an appointment was finally made, I contacted Billy about the central air unit as well as the gutters and other work that was to be completed. Of course, he and Aaron both had no recollection of our conversation. Because another client of theirs had a terrible experience with the construction crew, I demanded a project manager be on site to assure there was no debris left in my yard to protect my clients safety. The roof was tore off and put back on in one day, however, the gutters were done a different day and the chimney repair was never done. After the roof was complete, I received a phone call from my insurance company letting me know Brookens submitted a bill to them for the amount of $21,000; almost double our claim amount. This bill included work they said they performed and never did, hoping to make a profit. Prior to signing an agreement with Brookens, I did my research by looking at their reviews as well as contacting the BBB. All reviews turned up positive. However, after experiencing all of the above, I would strongly encourage potential clients to avoid doing business with Brookens Construction. I am not impressed with Emily, Billy or Aaron and feel they are unprofessional, lack good communication skills amongst themselves as a company, as well as their clients. If I would have known this is how my experience with them would turn out, I would not have fallen for their 'bait and switch' game.

Brookens Construction was organized, courteous and thorough in the entire process of our new roof. They met with my insurance adjuster as well as helping with the type and color of shingle. They did an amazing clean up job and left my yard looking the same as when they arrived. Amazing people to work with and so happy we chose them!
