Permits
- Building permit records show that Brown Built Custom Homes has worked on 22 permitted projects.
Our home building story with Tristan Brown of Brown Built Custom Homes started out well with apparent enthusiasm and professionalism…until we drove in from out of state to find windows were placed too high, not per plan. Next visit we found 3-foot overhangs per plan were only 16”. The entire roofline had to be re-engineered. There was NO COMMUNICATION about these major changes—no change orders. Unbelievable! We are praying that the engineering fix will withstand the harsh winds that occur here. Also discovered on that visit, an upstairs wall (per plan) above the stairway was missing. Framers were “finished” and had to be brought back in at what cost to us? And then we learned the HVAC system was located in the crawl space and not on the garage platform which had been constructed for that purpose. To change the filters we senior citizens must climb into the crawl space…
We were repeatedly told completion date would be the end of May…until suddenly in April, it wasn’t! We had put our old house on the market and ended up homeless for 6 weeks, which was definitely not in our budget. We got our Certificate of Occupancy on July 12 and moved into an unfinished home:
• the range top did not work and wasn’t replaced for 2-1/2 months
• closet doors were unfinished
• interior painting and touchup unfinished
• hardware in closets, bathrooms, and laundry room, along with patio door, had not been installed
• stair railings were unpainted and had to be removed and taken away to do so
• stair carpet was not stapled in place
• broken window had not been replaced
• window screens were not washed and installed (ended up washing off construction paint and stucco ourselves)
• Mirrors were not secured (had been hung with shoe strings—no kidding!)
• Garage door did not work
• Staining of exterior posts not complete
• Floor trim not installed
Construction continued at a snail’s pace. It is now March, 15 months after construction began. We still have not had a walkthrough with Brown. We have been calling, texting, emailing for months now: He has not addressed finishing the exterior pillar staining, cock-eyed cupboard and drawers, grout cracks appearing in master shower and kitchen backsplash, buckling garage door hinge, and concrete cracks in 6 panels in driveway and patio. Our last communication from Brown was on January 24 via text: “Will send request”.
Throughout this process, Brown has been mostly unavailable, unresponsive, and noncommunicative. Our son and daughter-in-law have the need and means to build a new home and of course, will not be choosing Brown Built—as well as their co-workers at the local hospital. Our travails have been widely shared. Brown has shut doors on legacy customers—certainly not the way to grow a successful business.
