    Replace roof
    $15,000

C&H replaced my 81-year-old mother's roof. They re-roofed over visibly damaged decking causing damage to the home. The job was done over a year ago and we have tried to work with them to get a resolution to the problems. They have completely ignored us. I filed a complaint with the BBB and C&H wouldn't even respond to them. Consequently, they are no longer accredited by the Better Business Bureau! STAY AWAY from C&H! They are not professional and are completely unethical!

Roofing and siding tear down and replacement
    $30,700

I hired C&H for several jobs. The first job (attic insulation and additional soffit vents) went well so I hired them for two further jobs:

    Roof:

Absolutely terrible experience. Steve and C&H Group spent two years working on my roof and never finished the install. Steve would constantly promise that the project would get finished but it never was. The building permit expired without the project completed. My yard and driveway were left a mess covered in nails, small pieces of super sharp steel, and a ton of construction debris.

Over the course of the project they would constantly try to change materials for cheaper non-equivalent materials. Steve was supposed to install a radiant barrier but tried to install it on only half the roof. Steve tried to install dryer vents and claim they were roof vents. Steve tried to install the roof without battens that the manufacturer calls for. Steve’s crew dented many roof shingles and no repairs were ever performed. Steve replaced the rake trim we wanted with an inferior ugly design. Pipejacks were not installed correctly and flashing was defective.

Many times, Steve and Monte just blamed each other for the problems but never made any progress. I checked the manifest from the materials wholesaler and they had never even ordered any roof vents or the trim pieces we wanted.

Steve’s crew suspiciously didn’t speak English when they were working on the job, but after a year they would come by my house and ask for payment in English. Steve uses the cheapest labor he can and withholds payments from them; and boy do the results show: two years passed and an incomplete roof.

In the end, Steve threatened to place a lien on my home for his incomplete roofing job that failed inspection. I suffered a significant (high $xx,xxx) loss because of their shoddy incomplete work. I thought I could trust C&H but was grossly mistaken. Don’t make the same mistake I did; just stay away from C&H and Steve.

    Siding:

Steve and C&H are liars out to steal your money. I was having my second story wood siding replaced with James Hardie cement fiber boards with what was supposed to be, 2 inches of foil faced polyisocyanurate rigid foam board. However, Steve delivered 2 inches of regular Styrofoam board to my house. After many calls we were able to get him to at least install 2 inches of polyisocyanurate but it was not foil faced. They did not refund any of the costs while switching to an inferior product. Furthermore, they did not install the foam board under every section of the siding per our contract.

I thought I had an overall good experience until I had another contractor out to review the work done by Steve and C&H. The flashing was not installed correctly. The house wrap was not taped correctly, especially around the corners of the house. The nails holding the siding up were over driven and not installed in the correct locations. A rep from James Hardie said they would not warrantee the product on my house because the installation was wrong. A number of siding pieces were installed with the vertical edge in a straight line across 3 boards. Instead of ripping several long pieces to fit around windows, Steve and C&H changed the width of the siding near the windows; this caused the edges at the corner of the house to not match up.

A “belly band” was supposed to be installed between the second floor with James Hardie and the first floor with brick siding (as the new Hardie board was sticking out 2 inches from the brick). This was never installed and instead a folded piece of metal was stuck under the siding. This piece didn’t drain correctly and wasn’t even installed completely around the house.

I thought Steve and C&H had done a good job but I didn’t know what I didn’t know. Don’t be like me and fall for Steve’s friendly demeanor. Don’t hire Steve and C&H. You will lose money. Your products will be installed wrong. If you do choose Steve and C&H, please, please get a 3rd party out to review the work before you pay him a red cent.
