By Dan Y.September 25, 2019AC Repair$75Response from Caledonian Mechanical October 27, 2019As a company with an A Rating, we strive, to provide quality work and customer service, day in and day out. Our overall positive ratings are a testament to this commitment. Unfortunately the account here does not accurately reflect our records and what occurred. Caledonian Mechanical was contracted through a home warranty company to diagnose an issue reported by this homeowner. The issue initially reported was that the "unit was blowing air, but not cooling". The initial diagnosis revealed the condenser fan motor to be non-operational due to a bad capacitor. The capacitor was replaced with a new one. The condenser fan was also changed. This fixed the reported problem. This homeowner experiences a lack of air flow to some rooms. We assessed the primary issue is due to dirty air filters that were compacted with what seemed to be years of dirt. There was little to no air circulating as a result. This lack of maintenance is not covered by warranty. We offered to change the filters at a private cost. That was refused. We suggested additional balancing dampers be installed to help increase the flow. Despite the homeowner’s insistence, this was confirmed to be an uncovered cost by the warranty. Our technicians have assessed that the unit fully functional. We have confirmed more than once that the additional service being demanded is not covered. This ticket is considered closed on our end. *CALEDONIAN MECHANICAL- FRIENDLY TIPS FOR OUR CUSTOMERS: We strongly recommend all of our customers maintain clean air filters to ensure proper air flow into the home. We recommend changing filters at least 2 X annually to avoid reduced air flow and additional damage to your unit. We also understand that many of our customers find us through their warranty company. We recommend our customers maintain a proactive dialogue with their provider any time there's a repair request made to ensure a clear understanding as to what is covered under your specific policy as each policy is different.

Caledonian Mechanical has the absolute worst customer service with incompetent, rude, and dishonest employees. We filed a claim through our home warranty and they selected Caledonian Mechanical to complete the job. Our AC unit had stopped working and when it was working it did not blow air into one of our rooms. On the first visit, Chris the owner showed up with a screwdriver and went to our unit. He spent about 10 minutes and said it’s fixed and charged us the service fee. Without any explanation or even attempting to turn the unit on he left. Our AC still did not work. When we called our home warranty they explained to us that Caledonian Mechanical had closed out the job order. So they called and Caledonian said no they ordered a part and were waiting for it to come in. At no point did Chris look at anything inside for the room without air. On their second visit they attempted to fix the AC. Chris had got the fan on the unit working and looked inside and said you have dirty filters and that’s the reason for the room not getting air. After running our AC we noticed there was no conditioned air coming into the house. The fan was working blowing air but it was the outside temperature not cold air. We again had to call and found out the work order had been closed. We had to reopen it. Caledonian replied that they had ordered a new condenser and were waiting for it to come in. On their 3rd visit they attempted to fix the AC unit and left wires exposed hanging out of the unit. The top plate was not fully attached. But there was cold air inside. Chris again came inside and without looking at anything within the attic or ducting, diagnosed a problem with the balancing of the unit. And mentioned that is not covered by home warranty. He walked out without further explanation. When we noticed the exposed wires and open air conditioning unit we again had to reopen the job order. The fourth visit an apprentice showed up. When he arrived he finally went into the attic but reported he couldn’t get into the side of the house where there was an issue. When I asked what would it cost to actually fix the issue his boss (Chris) already had a quote. After being directed around to the customer service rep (Sara) she mentioned a whole new balancing system was going to cost over $700. Knowing my home warranty already told me they would cover up to $1,000 of ductwork and balancing I said great when can we set that up. She assured me the home warranty doesn’t cover that, and I advised otherwise. She said she would call them and get back to me. After the apprentice finished zip tying the wires to the outside of my AC unit. (Not a fix for my issue) we again had to call our home warranty. The home warranty called Caledonian and Caledonian reported that we had caved in ductwork. Something that had not been mentioned or even looked at previously. And it is impossible for them to even get to that side of the house to diagnose.
My recommendation. Don’t use Caledonian Mechanical for anything, their customer service reps were consistently rude and continually lied. Their service technician is rude, does not know how to fix AC units, and leaves work unfinished and sloppy. And by the way when you close out a job, that doesn’t mean you ordered a part and are planning on coming back to fix it.
At this point we have had 4 visits without a good diagnosis or a fixed issue.
