We contracted the CertaPro of Marin franchise to paint both the interior and exterior of our 3k sq ft home in Mill Valley. We went in trusting that Ryan, the owner, was skilled and professional and would do a great job for us. After starting the work, it became clear very quickly that his crew was inexperienced and not professional. On the exterior work, they painted the windows while they were shut thus causing them to seal. In turn, it created cracked paint edges along the bottom edge of every window in the house when they had to be broken open. It resulted in unnecessary and additional sanding, repair and re-painting work having to be done. The most egregious problem was in the interior where they used semi-gloss latex paint on all of our semi-gloss oil-based painted wood surfaces (window frames, doors and cabinets) with little to no preparation. This resulted in paint almost immediately peeling throughout the house.
When we tried to find a solution, the franchise owner initially did not understand the concern and tried to minimize it. He and his regional CertaPro manager said the issue was “common” and was a “minor problem that would take 2 days to fix”…which stands in stark contrast to the scope of work attached to the bids we got from other professional painters that estimated that it could take 2-4 weeks and cost $15k-$20k to fix. It should come as no surprise that we are now in the midst of a major dispute that has led us to file a complaint with the CSLB and the painter levying a mechanic’s lien on our home. The net-net is that this franchise is inexperienced and will tell you anything to get the job. It is not worth risking your home, so save yourself a lot of headaches and avoid having the same experience we are having.
