This Brendan Clarke guy is a flake. We had a signed contract, time was of the essence for the project and at the last minute he bailed out on me, belligerently refusing to do the work. All after jerking me around for TWO MONTHS!
I needed to get the water line to my house replaced. The village was digging up and replacing the street so that presented an optimal opportunity since replacing the water line requires digging a large hole in the street to access the water main. There was, of course, a specific time frame that had to be worked with.
Clarke was recommended by a neighbor as offering the cheapest prices in town. Yeah, I know, but just replacing a water line seems straightforward.
End of July, I reach him on his cell. He asks for my info. by email which I send the same day. Ten days later, no response. I email back and he eventually shows up to inspect and emails his price August 12 which I accept by email. But I need to get the detailed proposal in writing to obtain the village permit. Only after weeks of nagging does he send it via email attachment: September 3! I return a signed copy, get the permit and let him know, all by September 7. I hear nothing for a week. The street construction project is progressing and time is running out. I email again. Two days later he replies that he will not do the work. I was stuck, foolishly not having obtained backup bids.
I should have suspected he would would be a problem when he did not get back to me when I requested an estimate. It took two weeks of pestering just to get an estimate. This guy is just impossible to deal with. Whether he responds to your communications is hit or miss, open to his whim. Totally unprofessional, disorganized, uncommunicative, bizarre behavior. Have to nag to get anything out of him. And then he bails out on a signed contract at the last minute.
Note that if he quotes to replace a water line, he does not hook up the water meter or do any plumbing. You have to hire a plumber separately to do that.
At this point I can't tell if he is even still in business or if there is an established, ongoing company operation. He is well into his 70's, so even if he is still around, the outlook is uncertain so if there is a problem with the work later on you may be out of luck.
You have been warned. He really screwed me over. Now I am stuck living with an old water line with weak pressure and slow flow.
