Clayton Hoover & Sons

Clayton Hoover and Sons are excellent at roofing. They have also expanded into other remodeling work, and this area of practice is experiencing growing pains and difficulties. The company has not come up with a consistent method for managing and tracking the costs and the progress of these non roofing projects. I hired them in August 2021 and paid a deposit for a roof replacement, the roof was installed in October and that went extremely well, but I chose Clayton Hoover because I also had other remodeling projects and wanted to use a single contractor for these projects if possible. In 2022 they also worked on resurfacing a deck and infrastructure repairs of this deck. This included a roof extension that was done in October with the main house. I was disappointed that there never were any drawings just discussions and a proposal. I was introduced to a supplier of a new composite decking system that Clayton Hoover wanted to use. I chose decking color and a railing system, and originally was going to expand the size of the deck. Paid a deposit in April based on the larger footprint. Then, after working on scale drawings of my own and finding complicated complexity in the expansion I decided to not change the size of the deck and just work with the existing size. For most contractors this would have been a CHANGE ORDER, but instead I got a new proposal, that overwrote the original proposal document. All in all, I received 4 overwritten proposals, each with different descriptions and pricing. I print everything, so I was able to follow and correct most changes, but in the process the deck pricing never seemed to reflect the decrease in size, and then the railing system was incorrectly listed, so I had to ask for again a correction. All in all if you are going to use Clayton Hoover my advice is to have someone take detailed notes at each meeting or RECORD the conversations, because the owner (Jonathan) and I remember these meetings VERY differently, when it comes to what was discussed and decided. Clayton started the project in June which included replacing the supporting posts by removing the old ones and pouring concrete footers in sonotubes. After the old posts were removed, the crew did not use a plumb bob to set the new concrete supports, so only one of the 6 post sonotubes lined up with the upper posts on the top of the deck. This lack of technical experience is part of the growing pains of their new line of remodeling business. It was remediated, but I probably should have insisted that the supports be redone accurately. There were many other issues as the project continued, and now in August all but one issue is resolved. If you are using Clayton Hoover for roofing they have honed this practice to an ART and that is their forte. Non roofing projects are a bit rough and challenging.
