Gave great care to listen for what was needed. Deck turned out great. Questions we had were answered thoughtfully and almost immediately.each time. Great experience!

My wife and I have debated and discussed whether to leave this review. We decided it was the ethical thing to do so that others would not experience what we did. This was one of the most stressful interactions with contractors I have had.

When we hired Don L. Stein to replace our deck, he told us he would complete it in 8 days. He ended up taking almost four months, and each week, he would tell us numerous times that he would be done that "Wednesday," or "Monday," or sometimes, that day. He would also tell us, numerous times that he would be out that afternoon "as soon as he finished up" with whatever deck he was working on, then wouldn't show (without a text letting us know he'd changed his mind about coming). He did this a minimum of a dozen times--saying he was coming but not showing. We continually adjusted our schedule to accommodate the days and times he assured us he would be there, but again, he often didn't show.

On the day we gave our final payment, he told us he would be done that day. He didn't finish for another two months (and didn't end up finishing completely, as I explain below).

He also charged us for material he didn't use, and this after he'd already given us his estimate. After three months of his acting irresponsibly (and giving us more excuses than we could keep track of as to why), we told him he was being unethical and asked how many projects he had taken on after starting ours. He then let it slip that he had taken on three more and that they "wanted their decks done yesterday" but that we had been so gracious, leading us to believe he continually put off completing our deck because we were kind and focused on completing those for the more demanding customers.

After that phone call, he texted us to apologize for his tone and for the constant delays and offered to complete step risers free of charge to compensate for all of the issues. We said we would appreciate that but he soon made it clear that this angered him. (I can only assume he was hoping and expecting us to say no, he didn't need to do this, and so was angered when we said we'd appreciate the risers.) This again resulted in numerous delays with him promising to come out, not showing, then getting angry when we asked where he was and when he was coming.

Finally, to move things along, I offered to go pick up paint for him (as he said him needing to pick up the paint was part of his delay).

He never did finish the risers. When I asked him about this, I received a long dramatic text telling me how I didn't value his time and he didn't see the need to finish as he knew we weren't going to give him a reference at this point.
