By Lew B.December 19, 2024Deck rebuild
Our 30 year old elevated deck, while still serviceable, was shabby and in need of updating - new decking, rails, fascia, and stairs. While other companies submitted their (significantly higher) bids remotely after requesting and viewing photos from us, John came to us for an onsite assessment. He followed with his analysis, plan, and quite reasonable bid. Making use of the existing deck's framing, the Craftsmen crew (John's sons) removed and hauled away the existing decking, rails, etc. The new deck took form over the following week and a half. In short order we had a fine new deck on the footprint of the old deck. All the work was excellent, as were the materials. John and his sons were always positive and enjoyable to work with and to have around. In 47 years in this home we have worked with many folks on a variety of remodeling and maintenance projects, and the folks at Craftsmen Deck are among the best. We certainly recommend them for your next decking project.

By S. D.June 3, 2024Deck stair rebuild
We needed to get new stairs for our deck. The first bid we got was to replace everything came in at over $6500. John came out and gave us a bid of $1500 to rebuild the existing stairs. He had his guys utilize the materials that were still in good shape to save us money which I really appreciated. It did end up coming in slightly over cost which he told us ahead for a total of $1750 which we were fine with. The guys did a great job & were done in one day. It was nice to get a contractor willing to do what we needed and not soak us. I will do the painting myself next spring after the wood dries out. I would recommend Craftsman if you want a company to do a good job for you at a reasonable price.

Based on our experience, we enthusiastically recommend Crastsmen Decks.

The project is rebuilding an elevated deck. John was the only contractor that came to our house to look at our project, talk to us and give a bid. Everyone else just gave a bid sight unseen without talking to us. We came up with a plan that is very nice. He and his crew work hard and are very nice. We recommend them!

John and Craftsman team did a great job on our deck renovation. I would highly recommend them.
They helped us decide on the best way to renovate our existing deck and get exactly what we were looking for. We were keep informed every step of the way as the work was being done, which was greatly appreciated. Quality work and no surprises at all.
I highly recommend John and the Craftsman team.

By Mark S.August 2, 2023Deck rennovation$20,500
I had Craftsmen Deck come out to give me a bid on replacing my deck (it sits about 10 ft off the ground). What impressed me right away is that John told me there was no reason to replace the outside support posts (which are very solid) or some of the beams. Their bid came in around $4k less than anyone else - much of that due to the fact they only replaced what was really needed. The other 5 companies I had bid on it, were going to replace everything - regardless of the condition. John and his crew did a great job, kept me in the loop on schedule and what was being done and he was very responsive if I had any questions. I highly recommend Craftsmen Decks.

We hired them to build a 10x14 pergola and do some repairs on our deck. Johns design ideas were the best and their price was comparable. We love the look of cedar and they are quite experienced working with it. Their workmanship was excellent. Overall project went smooth, communication was good and we have been very pleased with the outcome. We will hire them again for our next outdoor project!

John was initially quite nice to meet with. He seemed enthusiastic about our project of putting a pergola over an existing deck. However, experience quickly change. After payed him about $9000, it took him months to get to our project. Once he finally did get to our project, he would show up intermittently and for short periods of time. When the project did eventually get underway and I noticed some things about his work that even to my untrained eye seemed questionable as far as the integrity of the structure goes. I had a retired contractor come out and take a look, and he quickly told me that the things that I noticed were the least of my worries. The structure he was putting up had very compromised integrity. He had put 50% notched cuts in the LVL beams that were used to support the main structure. He weather wrapped the LVL beams poorly and actually the way that the wrap was put on actually captured water and held it next to the LVL beams, causing the beams to swell and retain fluid. Apparently these are big no-nos and from what I now understand a contractor working in construction should well know. Mr. Stephens also stated that he was attaching main beams to our house securing them on headers that were already within the wall. The other retired contractor that came out climbed a ladder to look at how the beams were secured to the house and said there were absolutely no headers in the wall which Mr. Stephens claimed there were. Mr Stephens actually placed them on one horizontal 2 by 4 and then put a few screws in them through our siding the heave weight of these beams in turn caused our siding to start pulling away from our house. There were also other issues such as Mr. Stephens cutting out full sections of two adjacent joists on the deck, this caused integrity issues on our deck itself. The deck was starting to sag in the middle. He also ripped up the composite deck boards that were temporarily in his way instead of unscrewing them which ultimately ruined them and made them unusable. Also the cedar posts were not plumb and not at 90° angles with a deck and were tilted. The list goes on. We brought many of these issues to the attention of Mr. Stephens along with other issues that I haven't even mentioned. Mr. Stephens reasonable and kind demeanor quickly changed. Mr. Stephens sent us an additional bill for a work change. So rather than him correcting his mistakes, he wanted us to pay for new LVL beams, and to also pay him to redo the work that he did incorrectly the first time. Once we said we would not be paying him for that, the conversation quickly degraded. Since that time when we attempted to retrieve our funds from him, he refused and instead of defending his works integrity, he claimed that we were racist bigots and even suggested that we hired a swat team that held him up at gunpoint with AR 15s in attempt to intimidate him and that is why he did not want to come back are reassess his work. You really can not make this stuff up... I can assure you that my husband and I are far from racist in any way shape or form. We would not have hired Mr. Stephens in the first place if we had any issues with race, age, gender, gender identity or any other claim he might try to make against us. Needless to say we had to hire another contractor to come out and completely take down the limited structure that Mr. Stephens had already put up. It took our contractor that we hired after Mr. Stephens three days to repair the damage that had been done to our property. Also, most of the wood that we had purchased through him was almost unsalvageable (over $20,000 worth). He left our property a complete mess. Piles of lumber and scraps and nails and screws and insulation that had come out of our walls all over our yard. He left three holes in our homes outer walls, cut shingles that we asked him specifically not to cut into. He left stain buckets and rollers all for us to clean up. Also, the stain job that he actually did do was terrible. Inconsistent, blotchy, completely lacking in some areas of the boards, leaves and dirt and grass stuck to the stain and the boards themselves stuck together because he didn't space them out and piled them up on top of each other to dry. So after over $20,000 in lumber and paying Mr. Stephens about $9,000 for work that he did not complete up to industry standard, were left having to hire someone else to completely rebuild our structure. We hope that if you decide to hire Mr. Stephens you can take these issues into account and hopefully avoid major losses in funds and poor workmanship. I would definitely not recommend Mr. Stephens based on our horrible experience with him. Also the license number that he lists on his advertising in The Home Mag magazine and in this site is only a registration number for contractors in the state of MN. He is not licensed in MN! Therefore there is no protection for the consumer. I have photos and documentation to back up ever claim that I have made.
Response from Craftsmen Decks June 6, 2023Mrs. & Mr. M, There is no doubt a hidden agenda here, since you are now posting reviews after allowing more than 2 years to elapse, but nevertheless we were surrounded at gunpoint in your very own backyard by SWAT and escorted out of your gated community during a time where racial tensions were at an all time high. Your neighborhood profiled us and this police incident can be easily verified as it is public record, and you know this to be true. Police called your husband, to verify our presence in his yard was for a legit reason. This narrative you wrote inflicting character damage and injuring reputation is disheartening at least. You’re in a highly skilled, knowledgeable profession and you vetted carpenters, including checking references. We are convinced that you didn’t reach this level of success in your life by not doing your homework. The conflict happened when the plans you provided, needed be changed mid-stream due your design blocking windows. Understandably, plans change and additional labor and materials are charged and needed in order to complete your new design. You wanted a whole new design, but did not want to pay for additional hours. And this is where we left off. It is unfair to complain about a project mid-stream. We don’t claim to know everything and the lesson learned for us is to never get involved in a project that is designed and managed by the homeowner. ie: hired your own footing co., hired your own framers, handling your own permit and bought your own materials (Siwek Lumber, Lowes.) We hope and pray that all the other trades that were hired and involved in this project are not getting the same treatment. -
By Monika R.December 4, 2022Refinish and repair a 20+ year old deck$7,500
John was a pleasure to work with. When he refinished our 20+ year old deck, he worked within the limited budget we had while also making helpful suggestions to improve on our original plan. After he saw the beat-up old baby gate I was using at the top of the deck stairs to keep my cat from getting off the deck, he volunteered to build a gate for me at no additional charge, which was definitely above and beyond the service I expected. The gate he built was perfect - it looks like it’s always been part of the deck design!
His work crew was professional and careful, and when I asked him to send someone out to make a few minor touch-ups after the job was done, John came out and did the work himself to make sure I was satisfied.
I would recommend Craftsmen Decks to anyone without hesitation.

John helped bring our half-done deck back to life ! He was kind enough to take over a partly done shoddy job (done by previous contractor). He did his absolute best to resurrect my deck. I was impressed with his knowledge and professionalism. I would definitely recommend hiring him for your next project!

John and his crew are simply amazing. He took on a pretty specific job with enthusiasm. He popped over on a Saturday to walk me through his plan and he could not have been a nicer or more professional person. I knew then the job was in the right hands. He squeezed us in into his busy schedule because he wanted our job done before some inclement weather. He and his crew did an amazing job and ensured the fix will last years and years. Good people who do great work. They're my go-to's from now on and already have 2-3 other projects planned with them. If nothing else, call them and have them stop by to chat about your project. You'll hire them on the spot!

I went through two different companies before I found this one! It was nice to get an honest answer for once.

Had a phenomenal experience with Craftsmen Decks. We Had a 25 year old deck that was falling apart and really wanted to get it remodeled before the spring. They had availability in December and started work within a week of signing the contract. They worked in the snow and cold and did a really professional job. John and his team were extremely responsive and completed the job quickly (despite snow, subzero cold and the xmas/New Year holiday). John was super responsive and made sure the job was done well. As a bonus, we had received bids from a number of other contractors and all were substantially higher than Craftsmen. Fair and affordable pricing and exceptional customer service. I highly recommend.
