Short version is that the finish work quality/outcome was horrible and Wesley’s temper, outbursts and threats made this the worst experience I have ever had with a contractor. Look at the pictures and decide for yourself.
All interaction other than initial project details and scheduling was with Wesley. In the end Wesley claimed nothing he promised was legal because he was not the owner. Make no mistake , Wesley is the owner in every way except on paper. Everything we wanted including materials and images of what we wanted were documented and sent to the owner (his wife) and Wesley before we started. We originally had two $800 doors in the project which were removed from the project and in exchange there were a few minor changes like adding one outlet and changing from 2x4 to 2x2 ceiling tiles. Nothing too extreme. Wesley agreed to all of this but since I went to the RI Licensing Board with formal complaint, Wesley now claims these are extras even though in the end I not only paid 10% more than the original contract price but I also purchased materials outright. This was in addition to loosing the $1,600 in material costs for the doors.
I will say that Wesley was very neat and diligent . He is a hard worker but his temper gets in the way of civil discourse. The project did start out ok but it was clear there were communication issues from the start. The quality issues showed up later. I had him redo his work more than once because it was not done properly or to code. Early on he built a wall that partially blocked access to the furnace. He also installed a door jam that stuck out 1” at the top. I had to ask that he secure the bottom plate of wall that was literally moving. Who does this? The final straw was when he brought in unskilled laborers to perform finish work in his rush to complete the project and move on to his next project. On that last day his temper and outbursts frightened my girlfriend to the point where I just paid him and had him leave . At that point I knew I would need to hire another contractor and withholding payment was not worth the physical altercation. The next day when the paint dried and the floor buckled I knew I never should have paid him!
I did ask for a partial refund when two other contractors and a retired building inspector confirmed that about 50% of his work needs to be redone. It was also pointed out that some of his work does not meet code. He never pulled a permit either. This leaves me in a precarious position. When a contractor tells you “ I asked my buddy and I don’t need to pull a permit” you just know you are screwed :-)
I attempted to work with the owner but it was Wesley that responded with all kinds of verbal abuse and threats of violence. At one point Wesley texted me that I should be concerned that he has a criminal record. Apparently, Wesley is under the delusion that asking for a refund because of poor work product is blackmail. I had to call the police and block his number because he blew up my phone with calls and texts. He took this situation as some kind of personal attack.
In my opinion , Wesley has emotional / behavioral issues. He lacks dispute resolution skills and the requisite self control and patience to handle larger projects in my opinion. This is sad because I think he is capable of good work. The moment he wanted me to sign two different contracts : one with generic wording and one with the details we discussed I should have walked away.
