By Deborah H.June 14, 2019Stabilize my house following an earthquake and repair water damage.$5,500
This liar did not complete the signed contract for work on my earthquake damaged house. The work he did was shoddy and unprofessionally done. I was promised an Engineer's Report verifying that my house was stabilized once the work was completed. I not only did not receive this Engineer's report, I discovered that the man, Dan represented as a structural Engineer, was not a structural engineer. The cedar siding, which was supposed to be replace was not replaced and has water damage with curling and swelling. The cedar paneling inside my home was cracked and separated during the work. The outside of my house was disfigured even more after Dan's crew worked on it. Doors that closed before the work, now don't close. Landscaping that was taken apart for the work, was not replaced, so I have timbers laying all over my yard. Shelves he took down during repairs and replaced after, have now fallen off the wall. Dan charged for work he did not do. Dan refused to complete the work or repair the damage he did during repairs. Dan had the nerve to ask for more money than was contracted for. Dan and his crew are not only inept, but dangerously so. At this point I am not even sure my house is safe to live in.

By AaronMay 25, 2019Repair earthquake damage and repair some water damage$7,000Read more
I was in Alaska helping my elderly mother, who works full time and raises my 7 years old niece, find a contractor, to repair some earthquake damage and some water damage, on her home.
We had previously discussed the earthquake damage with an engineer who said the best fix would be to run a long bolt through the house, and pull the house together. Dan agreed with this and he said "his engineer" also agreed, and he said we would get an engineer's report saying the house is more stable after the fix than before the earthquake.
I was at home during the repairs, and I told Dan and his very rude foreman, I would like to watch them when they actually pull the house together. Of course I wasn't told and something did go wrong, but Dan wouldn't tell us for a few days, what it was, I'm not even sure he was on site when they pulled it together.
So after whatever went wrong Dan decided he wouldn't finish the job, he tied into a header in the middle of the house and left it, and he still wanted pretty much full pay, except for a soffit he didn't make.
When we finally got a report for his engineer, it says this was just a temporary fix, when confronted about this Dan lied to my mother and told her he had discussed this as a temporary fix with me.
Dan was also supposed to fix a wall with some water damage.
He told me it would cost $800-$1000 depending on whether he could find the right siding or had to make it himself.
When I left the state Dan doubled the price of the water damaged wall without giving any reason, also he never even attempted to replace the siding. In fact he left a huge mess in the yard he refused to clean up.
Dan said anything and everything he needed to, to get the job, he over and over said " I'll not that kind of contractor". "I understand your mom's situation and I'm not going to go over my bid". He told me many times, he wouldn't ask for his final payment until we said we were satisfied with his work. Now he says he won't finish the job on the wall with water damage until he gets the extra money he tacked on the job after I left, for no articulated reason. He also won't clean up the mess he made in the yard, leaving timbers that were buried, strewn about.
Dan is that bad kind of contractor who will go over budget as soon as he gets you committed, he lied to me and my mother over and over again. He's taking advantage of a woman who is doing all she can just to try to keep her home from falling on top of her and he's left her worse off than she was before he came. I mean really who would pay over $5000 for a temporary fix? Why wouldn't we have just put that towards the actual fix? Dan screwed us! You've been warned about Dan he will say whatever he needs to then change everything as soon as he senses you are vulnerable. I could go on and on about how nothing Dan said about the schedule or timeframe of the job was true. We really don't know what to do at this point, basically we will need to hire a new contractor to start from scratch, so Dan if you are reading this, we aren't satisfied! So come and fix it like you promised over and over before!

Experience with Dan Pender & D &M construction. Do not hire them. They started our earthquake damaged home in March 2019. Our home is still torn up, have a moat & a huge hole the size of a swimming pool beside the house no ceilings in the main level, jack hammered Spanish tile floors left, bare exposed Sheetrock since May 2019. Our beautiful landscaping has been destroyed & will take years & lots of money to recover. The project was to take 4-6 months tops. We are now more than 17 months into his empty promises & BTW he’s spent less than 5 hours here since October 2019. And the work he has done has to be redone as he did not do work “his” engineer put in writing. His crews have left garbage & junk all over including black plastic beads full of debris that we have had to haul to the dump 4 trips. If anyone disagrees we have photos emails text messages to back up our word about his work. What has done was use our money to start other projects. Don’t be fooled by this person or his poor empty excuses. DO NOT HIRE D & M!
