My experience with DH Smith Roofing was simply abysmal. I hired DH Smith to replace my roof and put vinyl siding on my home. Here we are, over two months after I signed a contract with DH Smith and I finally just had to hire someone else to complete the work.
The roof work was completed without too much complication. Dave's staff did ruin two of my incredibly large hydrangeas and throw away a very large amount of my landscaping rock. This upset me greatly, but that was just the beginning.
When Dave and I signed the contract, I told him exactly the kind of siding that I wanted. Right before he was to start, he called me and told me that the siding wasn't available in the color I wanted and that I would have to go with another brand. He said the color was the same. I asked him to bring me a sample of the new siding; it was NOT the same color and it clearly was an inferior product. I called a few siding warehouses and they all confirmed that they did have plenty of the siding in stock and that what he was trying to give me was a much cheaper product. I emailed him and told him that I wanted to stay with the original siding. He clearly was looking to switch the product to save some money on the job.
I also asked him to send someone to measure my windows and give me an estimate. He told me that each window would cost $700. Assuming that was high, I got other estimates all which came in at around $300.
On May 16, work began on my siding. Although the work was moving INCREDIBLY slowly, I attributed that to the fact that I do have an old house. On May 20th, Dave emailed me to tell me that they were half way done with the project and I would need to leave the middle payment. Even though they weren't quite halfway through, I thought they were close enough so I did. He then further emailed me and said he expected to be done by May 19. That seemed highly implausible to me, but I thought maybe the work would start going faster.
In the weeks that followed, work seemed to slow down considerably. On June 16, Dave's business partner came to my home and told me that one of the gentlemen who had been working on the job had an ill mom so I wouldn't see any work for the next week. He then asked me for the final payment even though the job was only 2/3 complete. I didn't give it to him.
A few weeks passed, Dave stopped returning emails and I was left with debris all over my yard, equipment everywhere and an incomplete project. I then had a family friend who knows Dave contact him to ask him what was going on. He promised that someone would be at my home on the following Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Monday and the job would be complete. In true fashion, someone showed up for an hour on Thursday and then never showed again. I finally emailed Dave last week and gave him 24 hours to get his stuff off of my property and told him if he did not, it would become mine. He clearly got that email because his business partner showed up the next morning. He did say someone would be back to clean up all of the debris; two days later and no one has shown up yet. I'm not holding my breath.
I am so very thankful that I didn't give this horrible, unprofessional liar the final payment. His countless lies, empty promises and sloppy, messy staff was literally the worst I have EVER encountered. Save yourself a million headaches and do not hire him. He is the worst.
