    $20,000

    The owner was contracted to do work on my house and required a significant payment upfront, $10,000 on a total job estimate of around $20,000. After receiving the money the owner became difficult to deal with and refused to start work demanding to be paid even more money.

    I won a breach-of-contract lawsuit against the owner who now owes me $19,250 in damages but he refuses to pay any of what is owed. Due to the owner being in Ch. 13 bankruptcy, where he has been for years we found out, it is unlikely he will be held accountable for his unethical conduct. My lawyers advised me that further legal action against the owner would be stayed by the bankruptcy court.

    Avoid a major headache and hire someone else.
