Owner
If you are in the market for a general contractor or builder for a home renovation or addition, do yourself a HUGE favor and STEER CLEAR of DB Construction at all cost. I hindsight, I SHOULD have chosen one of the many honest, reliable, and quality contractors that I have seen recommended on this site, but instead I chose DB Construction. This ranks up there as one of the biggest mistakes that I have made in my adult life.
At every step along the way, the owner, Pasquale Petti, made the construction process much more difficult and stressful than it already is. It was only after I signed the contract, committed to a 5 month lease on an apartment, stored most of my belongings and moved my family out of the house, that I discovered what he is all about. Once I was in that vulnerable position, he demanded an additional $5000 (not for any additional work or changes, mind you, just to do what he was already contractually obligated to do), and he insisted that the architect make design changes to reduce his costs or he would not proceed. At that point, I had considerable sunk costs, not to mention the tremendous inconvenience to my family, so I saw little choice but to meet his demands.
Once he finally got around to starting, progress was often slow because there were many times that he would go weeks and weeks and weeks at a time without anybody working on my house (or even telling us when someone would). He repeatedly refused to do work that was clearly written on the drawings. When pressed, he repeatedly refused to provide anything resembling a schedule or rough timeline and he refused to meet with us in person to discuss our concerns. He repeatedly produced shoddy, rushed work that was riddled with mistakes, and missed a critical deadline that was written into the contract, all the while pointing the finger at everyone except at himself. He invoiced me for work that was not totally complete. His crews used several pieces of my equipment without permission and broke my whelbarrow. His subcontractor defaced my composite deck and he refused to acknowledge fault or repair it. And finally, even though change orders extended the project deadline, he still blew clear past the extended date (which HE set) and when I got upset about it, he told me that I was the most unreasonable person he has ever met. Maybe I'm old fashioned or just naiive, but I met every term of the contract to the letter, and I do not think it should be considered unreasonable to expect the same of a contractor.
This is not a person or company that you want to do business with. There are way too many details to write about them all here, but if you are considering using Pasquale Petti and DB Construction for any project large or small, I urge you not to make the same mistake that I made or you will surely regret it as much as I do!
