Garage and patio demo and pour
    $10,000

The work seemed ok at first – the general scope is fine, but once the concrete was dry enough to walk on it and inspect the details it was shockingly bad.
When confronted with complaints about the work was extremely defensive and more worried about the “tone of my voice” than with understanding the issues we had problems with.
He had asked if he could have the framing wood back as it was so expensive, then complained to me that he should have charged me for removing the forms!
Complained after the fact that gas was very expensive and that it cost so much to come do the job. (note he came to my house twice before hand – why didn’t he simply include that in the bid or turn down the job??!)
Complained that he should have charged me more for the job.
They did not plan on an exit from the property after the concrete was poured as the driveway was the full width of the gate, and the crew had to exit the yard by going through the garden then jump over the edge of the driveway, and they trampled the deer fencing (when brought to his attention he ‘oh that chicken wire you can just bend it back’. ) My question was why didn’t THEY bend it back after they damaged it?!
When he thought I was complaining about the wooden fence, he told me that was the concrete company’s problem, not his. (Note they hired the concrete truck company, not me, and there was no mention of other companies being responsible for damages).
He claimed I stopped work every 30 minutes by asking questions. Again, utter nonsense. I did ask some questions of him while he was either standing there watching his crew work, or if there was something going on that was concerning or contrary to what he had spelled out in the estimate.
Did not put down the vapor barrier that he said he would when doing the outside section, which we told him was going to be an enclosed porch. Also did not put any wire or rebar reinforcement in the outside area after telling me they would.
They took MY garden tools down from the wall and USED them during the concrete pour, damaged some of them and refused to reimburse me for destroying them. Did NOT ask for permission, did not apologize. Also took 2 of my shovels home and left me with a broken shovel and a damaged hoe. (they did return the 2 they took, but absolutely refused to replace or reimburse for the damaged hoe). Who uses a clients’ tools without asking and why did they need my tools in the first place?!! Whey didn’t they bring their own? And refuse to replace anything that was damaged. Just unbelievable.
One large area in the corner of the garage was left undone and there a HUGE gap /drop off from the new concrete to the old concrete. Got no real explanation…said it wasn’t under the original bid, said we had been trying to do it on the cheap (this was a $10,000 job and we NEVER complained about the price and in fact increased the scope of the work by almost 40% from original estimate!). Utter nonsense. He simply didn’t supervise his crew when it came to the detail work, and they didn’t tell them and he didn’t tell me this needed to be addressed. So instead he got rude, angry and abusive and condescending when we complained.
They came and did some minor work along the edge of the garage, and then did some minor repair work with DIFFERENT colored concrete, which was pretty much pointless as it was only a partial fix.
Overall, this guy is probably fine pouring a driveway or a slab with no complications on virgin property, but if you have landscaping or if you have to tie into existing work, or if you have any criticism of his work, you will be VERY unhappy I promise.
