Eureka Valley did fairly extensive work for us last year. I would highly recommend them. We converted our unused garage to an in-law unit and added a master bath. Jim, the owner, is one of the nicest people you'll ever meet. He's experienced and down-to-earth. He was stuck working with plans done by an architect who really didn't do a great job for us, and Jim was able to work around many of the sticking points. My parents had moved in with us unexpectedly due to illness, so we were building in real time for them. Jim and his team went above and beyond to make sure they interacted with my parents and had a sense of their needs. When it was time to tile their bathroom, he suggested an ADA shower insert because he was aware of my mom's mobility issues. The architect was the exact opposite - felt like he was designing for his website portfolio whereas Jim had our true needs in mind.
I will say that part of what worked for us is that we are flexible people and were willing to be open-minded on solutions. Jim and his team were always professional and reliable, but I got the feeling that part of the reason everything went so well for us is that we were all collaborative. We got another estimate from a different contractor who was much more type-A and "everything has to be done a certain way." His references all said the work was excellent, but it was more important for us to have friendly people that would work with us. There are probably some people out there that want the type-A folks, but we wanted a solid relationship and trust, and we got that with Eureka Valley. We felt very confident in their recommendations and pricing, and that they were doing what was best for us at each turn.
So that's my only caveat - these guys are friendly and laid-back, not necessarily rigid perfectionists. They did what needed to be done to get the job done on time and on budget. The job was done well at a great price, and we know we have a lasting relationship. In fact, our basement flooded last week and Jim sent out the main guy from our team to see if he could find the problem since he had a lot of experience with our house. He wanted to make sure it was not related to any work they did, since many changes were made to the foundation. He did find the problem, and stayed on site to help us fix it that day (it was completely unrelated to construction - had a clogged exterior drain on the other side of our house that was backing up into the basement).
We've used them on more than three projects, from a small bathroom makeover to a substantial demolition and expansion. They do an excellent job at a reasonable price and are pleasant and easy to work with -- easily the best contractors we've had contact with.
