  I hired Steve to install a new service panel. SMUD showed up for design consult and determined I would have to modify my deck before the service panel could be replaced. Turns out, the steps were too close to the panel, which requires a 36” wide x 30” deep flat area beneath the panel. We put the project on hold until I could make the necessary modifications. I was kind of shocked that Steve didn’t know that ahead of time and we had to rely on SMUD had to tell us that, seeing how he had repeatedly told us he had been doing panels for almost 30 years.
  When Steve did return to change the panel and run a new support pole through our roof, he and his subcontractor left a mess of metal shavings and wire pieces on the deck and in our gravel. I asked Steve if he was going to clean it up. He said his subcontractor was supposed to have cleaned it. I went in to cut the check and met Steve at his truck. I gave him the check and then returned to the panel. To my surprise, there was nothing cleaned up. I immediately called Steve and he said he would clean it up when he returned for the County permit inspection. Well, we ended cleaning it up with a magnet since there were sharp shards throughout the gravel.
  When Steve returned for the inspection, the inspector said the work was not right and the correct grounding pole needed to be installed. Steve’s response was “I have done a lot of these and no inspectors called me on that before.” The inspector responded that the requirement had been in place for over 3 years. I was a little frustrated. Steve said it was BS and blamed the inspector, again stating no other inspectors had called him out on the ground type requirement.
  The inspector scheduled a 2nd visit window from 9 to 11AM. The inspector showed up at 9AM, and Steve showed up a few minutes later, and the work had not been done yet. Needless to say the inspector was a little pissed. I was too. The inspector told Steve to call the county office to schedule when the work was finished. Steve finished the work and scheduled a 3rd inspection by the county.
  When the inspector showed up, he checked the work and ran through the list of items that had been verified. Missing from that list was the roofing work where Steve and his cohort had drilled through and installed flashing. I told the inspector the roof work was missing and he said “what roof work? It is not on the permit.” The inspector then inspected the roofing work and said it was wrong. The flashing was not correct and would have to be remedied. Once again, he again told Steve to contact the county office when the work was done to schedule a 4th inspection. By this time I was very frustrated. Steve then said he would contact a roofer friend and have him do work. I got the feeling Steve and the original subcontractor don’t know anything about roofing. Now I had zero faith in Steve’s capabilities. Since my roof was pretty new, under warranty, and I had no faith in Steve’s work, I told Steve I would have my roofer make the repairs and to deduct the cost from the Job total. My roofer was understanding and not only gave me a great price, he did the work quickly.
  Finally the 4th time around, the inspector signed off on the permit.
  Following the whole fiasco, I put a bad review for Steve. His response was to lay blame on me for all the problems on the job.
  Well, it turns out, as a part of the job, Steve ran new grounding rods into the ground and ran a ground line from the box to the cold water line. I come to find out, Steve ran the ground wire across the front of my crawl space access beneath my deck. I now have to reroute the ground to access beneath my house in order for a different contractor to do some plumbing work. What a nightmare. I recommend, whatever you do, don’t hire Steve.
