I hired Michael Gladden of Fathers & Son's Painting thru the online service Thumbtack. Michael was one of 3 vendors who responded and quoted our job. We needed our deck stripped and re-stained. Michael's quote was $400 more than one of the others, but we decided to go w/Michael because he said all the right words about guaranteeing the work, being licensed & insured, and having the necessary experience. He also seemed to genuinely want the work. We signed his contract and paid him half down. That started a process of waiting for them to show up, calling him, and texting. His crew did come out and work, but they would come for a very short day, and then not come again for several days. They did a poor job of stripping the deck, leaving pressure washing gouges on the wood, and leaving much of it simply not stripped. Then they stained right on top of the old stain, spreading unevenly, and leaving some areas with no stain at all. I expressed concern to Michael along the way as I was seeing the results, but he kept saying that he promised that they would be fixing the areas of concern and that we would love the finished product. Then when they were "almost done", Michael asked for the other half of the payment. He indicated that he really needed the money that day and convinced my husband that they would come back and finish the work, so my husband not only paid him the second half of the contracted price but gave him $100 more because we always tip people we hire. After we paid them the second half, they came back one time and worked for about an hour. I have repeatedly called Michael and texted him. At first, he responded that he was a man of his word and he would come back and finish the job. Then he quit responding at all. After it was clear he wasn't coming back, I submitted a Thumbtack review. He has since deleted his profile on Thumbtack so now that review is not public. I have also looked on the LLR site, and I find no license. Our deck looks crappy, it's not complete, and we are unhappy.
