Hired this company to do a whole house renovation. Needed a new roof, new electrical wiring, new plumbing, kitchen installed, additional bathroom installed, 2nd floor laundry installed, interior and exterior painted, drywall and insulation installed on third floor, hardwood floors refinished, new porch decking installed, repairs to front and back porch done and HVAC installed. This was a major contract running well into six figures.
The HVAC, roofing, and electrical work FJM Contracting subcontracted out. The HVAC and electrical contractors were absolutely great; we had no problems with them and we still call on them when we need work done (we own 7 houses in the local area and are always needing contractors for something, it seems). The roofing subcontractor did mostly OK, but forgot to flash a chimney and, during the first rainstorm after they finished the roof, we had a major leak around that chimney and had to replace some new drywall and repaint in one room. Because of that, we haven't used the roofing subcontractor again.
FJM Contracting handled the drywall, painting, plumbing, floor refinishing, new bathroom and laundry installation and porch repairs. They were supposed to do the kitchen installation but we fired them before they got to that part of the job. The owner of FJM Contracting did the plumbing himself.
Virtually all the work done by FJM Contracting had to be redone by other contractors because the quality of the work was poor. There was problem after problem due to their inexperienced crew and lack of communication and lack of attention to detail. One room had to be painted THREE times because they kept painting it the wrong color, even though I gave them written instructions on the paint colors/finishes for each room in the house. They used dirty paint rollers and rolled dirt and lint into the paint so we had to have several the interior rooms repainted by another contractor. They got paint on the oak hardwood window and door trim in every room and didn't clean it off. The floor refinishing was poor quality work that had to be redone.
When they plumbed in the laundry, they reversed the position of the front loading washer and dryer so that the doors, when opened, banged into each other so we had to have another contractor redo that. We had to have the clawfoot tub moved because they installed it too far out into the room. We had radiant floor heating installed in the new bathroom under a tile floor. The heating only works in half the room because they didn't test it properly before installing the tile. The tile they laid over the radiant floor heating was badly laid. It's so uneven that I've tripped several times on the edge of the tiles. We haven't had this floor redone yet, but it will have to be done at some point.
Also, FJM Contracting tried to do work that wasn't in the contract that we specifically told them we didn't want done--FJM Contracting started to dig up the outside gas line even though it had recently been tested for leaks and was fine and we told him NOT to dig it up. They pulled up a brick patio to do this and did not restore it back to what it was before they pulled it up.
FJM Contracting went over budget and over the timeline. We finally fired FJM Contracting because of the poor quality work and the inability to complete the job in a timely fashion. In spite of having paid FJM Contracting for all the work that was completed to the point where we fired them, FJM Contracting sued us (the owner of FJM Contracting used his brother, who is an attorney, to file the suit) and put a mechanics lien on our property. FJM Contracting wanted to be paid for the full contract even though they weren't completing the job and even though the work which they had completed mostly had to be redone by other contractors It took over a year (and several thousand dollars) to settle the lawsuit . I've dealt with many, many contractors and generally had good experiences but FJM Contracting was horrible. The only experience I can imagine that might be worse is if a contactor took the money for the job and just disappeared.
