I began my career in gardening in 1979 while an undergraduate student at UC Berkeley working part time during the school year and full time in the summer to pay for my education. My first gardening jobs began with working for homeowners who were both passionate and knowledgeable about plants as well as several professional landscapers including Charles Lutner Landscaping and Lawrence Fleury Landscape. When I graduated in 1981 I continued working in the field and eventually started my own business in 1983.
During this same period I had been studying and performing Flamenco guitar which eventually led to a trip to Spain where I lived, studied, and performed from 1985-1987. On my return in 1987 I re-started my landscaping business with renewed commitment and I continued my education in Landscaping and horticulture at Merritt College as well as taking other specialized classes in irrigation and art and design.
My early experiences with homeowners who were passionate amateur gardeners left an important impression on me regarding how important a beautiful landscape can be as a place for expressing oneself through the rich palette of colors, textures, fragrances, and even sounds that are available through the medium of gardening, and what a rich and restorative asset and experience one's garden can be. I have found that when a client takes an active role in shaping the garden in the way that fits their own vision that they are the most happy and satisfied with the outcome. I therefore see my role as a Landscaper as being part of a collaborative effort where I can offer my expertise and experience by providing inspiration, ideas and options that will help the client create a garden that they feel connected to and which meets their needs.

Frank did an exceptional job on turning our ugly dead grass front lawn into a dynamic and rich landscape with drip irrigation on a automatic system. It is both beautiful and stress free.
In addition, he feels strongly about getting to know the client's personal plant preferences and aesthetics. He provided suggestions while still trying to accommodate my personal preferences. The final result shows his deep knowledge of what plants work best where, while having it still feel like it reflects my own personality and aesthetics.
We have had several folks in the neighborhood taking photos of our front yard in addition to folks asking for his info.
We still use him for regular maintenance of the front yard he designed in addition to maintenance of our backyard. I intend to have him help me re-design the backyard in the future.
