Gary replaced my front cement steps which had been damaged by the winter freeze/thaw action. He quoted the job and was hired. The steps included a side railing, which was inserted into the cement in the old set. When he was done he told me the railing wasn't his responsibility. I asked why since it was mounted into the cement previously. He had no appreciable answer.
While removing the old steps he cracked an adjacent cement walkway. The three foot long crack was obviously done by smashing the adjacent walkway. The cracks pointed right to it. When I asked him about it he said immediately that it was there already and he should have taken a pic to prove it. It wasn't there before. I left the subject alone. But then he replaced the cracked section. Then there was a problem with him, in removing the old staircase. The front cement face of this eight foot or so high porch was ripped away be a couple of inches. There was a 2" to 3" gap at the top where this wall of cement pulled away. When I asked him about it he said I'd have to get a mason to fix it. He intended to leave that gap exposed! I insisted he at least fill the top in, since there was no way to push it back in place. He did seal it, in the end.
The railing situation ended like this. I told him I wouldn't pay him until the job was done. He insisted I had to. I refused. Then he offered that I withhold $100 until he returned in two days to affix the railing. I told him I'd withhold $250 because he needed more incentive to return. He said I wouldn't do that if I knew his reputation. He never returned.
