Jessie Barnes and Bryan Hertzig from Generations Remodeling LLC, 8544 Rhone Rd., in Santee quoted a flooring job and did not comply with the work order, they did not complete the job correctly and they tried to cover their error with a phony receipt. They sold themselves as the installers and quoted three days to install the 661 sq. ft. of vinyl flooring and complete 16 stairs, runners only, with “flush mount” nose rounds. Instead Jessie showed up Tuesday morning with someone else Generations remolding LLC contracted to do the job, something Jessie or Bryan never mentioned when quoting. The individual appeared to be one job away from homelessness and I am not certain if he was licensed, but I am certain his girlfriend who he brought with him was not, I will let the Contractors State Licensing Board look into that. John, the person Generations Remolding contracted, his girlfriend and another person John hired, who also may have not been licensed, worked for three days and completed about 60% of the flooring and no stairs by Thursday at 3:30p.m. Before John left that day, he informed me he would not be on-site Friday to finish the job because he was scheduled to work at another site. Jessie contacted me later Friday afternoon asking to work Saturday, but I could not accommodate and she immediately threatened to pull work for 10 days. When Jessie got no results, she requested a “progress payment” and said she would be on-site Monday for payment. Payment was discussed before we proceeded and since the job was simple and requiring only three days by Jessie’s estimates, Generations Remolding requested 10% upfront and the balance on completion and never mentioned anything about progress payments.
Jessie appeared on-site at 8 a.m. Monday 5/24 with another worker who remained in the car. Instead of Jessie and her worker getting started at 8am, Jessie argued for an hour requesting $1,137.50 payment for stair work that they had not even started. She had me speak with Phil Hertzig, owner, who also argued for payment of work they had not started. Finally, they agreed to finish the remaining flooring and complete the stairs before leaving Friday and I would pay them in full. After a long 12 hour day, they finished at 8pm. It was dark outside and I was not allowed to go up the stairs for inspection due to gluing of the steps. The stairs appeared fine from a glance and I keep my end of the contract paying Jessie cash in full that she documented on a receipt. Before leaving she said we could not walk on the steps for 24 hours. We went back to inspect the stairs later the next day and discovered that Generations remolding had incorrectly attached the stair rounds. We were told by Jessie and Bryan to purchase “flush mount” stair round, which we did and flush mount stair rounds were documented in the work order from day one. When I confronted Generation Remolding about the stair rounds the following is the response I received from Bryan:
We installed the components as per your guidance and you approved and paid on the job. We are done, if you would like something different, then that would be a change order.
Thank you,
Bryan
This is an unmistakable lie, because neither my wife nor I spoke with anyone at Generation Remolding requesting any change to the nose rounds. “Flush mount stair nosings,” was the mounting method from the beginning. In the receipt that Jessie signed, Generations Remolding changed the note for the nosing to “cap mount” without approval or providing an email copy. This is the type of business they practice and should not be trusted. I will be filing my claim with the Contractors State Licensing Board and pursuing small claims court for the damages they have caused.
