We first hired Gene, on the recommendation of our neighbor, to find and fix some structural damage to our house that occurred during a rough winter. It included replacing exterior window sills, fixing the flashing on a roof overhang, and repairing a good part of our kitchen ceiling. As it turns out, one of the leaks was from an upstairs toilet that had been improperly placed. Gene replaced the toilet seal and fixed the ceiling with extra protection to prevent further damage. Everything was done impeccably.
Later, a water softener literally exploded (really!) because of a faulty water pressure gauge, causing a basement flood – about 1.5 inches. After the cleanup, we asked Gene if he could recommend a complete basement overhaul, which he did. We had quotes (before the flood) from previous contractors, which were astronomical. Gene quoted a lower price for a good deal more. We trusted him because of our prior experience with him, and we were not disappointed – far from it. Gene always delivers more than you might expect with great attention to detail, knowledge of all forms of construction, a sense of design, and an understanding of how to do things at least expense without sacrificing quality. In addition, he knows how to listen. Unless you explicitly tell him that you want to leave a major decision to him, he’ll make sure you get the best execution of your idea. The basement is now complete, including a new bathroom with shower, lots of hidden storage space, and a built-in bookshelf. Gene did tiling, carpeting, ceilings, doors, lighting (with his electrician), and plumbing. He is truly amazing.
During the time that Gene was working on the basement, we had another calamity… kitchen tile situated over the garage buckled. Apparently, when we had the kitchen floor tiled (by someone else), they had neglected to do certain fundamental things, leaving air pockets under the tile. Also, the tile had been laid directly against cabinetry instead of leaving space to be covered with molding. (Buyer beware!) The cold from the garage probably affected the air pockets and pushed the tile up, it having nowhere to go. Gene fixed it all and kept us informed about what he was doing to prevent the situation in the future. He also made sure that he worked in a manner that allowed us to use the kitchen all the while. Gene does for his clients what he would like others to do for him. Those aren’t just words; he cares about all the needs of the client.
With the basement finished, we asked him to work on the outside of the house, including roof repair, chimney repair (in progress as of this writing – beautiful job), repair of cracks in concrete and macadam, replacement of the roof on the garage door overhang, shoring up the garage ceiling under the kitchen, removal of an unwanted gas line, and resetting some huge slate stone leading to the back door. Without going into great detail, everything is done and being done to perfection. Gene is a perfectionist. He even replanted grass removed due to resetting the slate!
We consider Gene a friend; he’s that kind of guy – someone you cherish knowing. In addition to all the talent he has in construction, he tells great stories and has a wonderful sense of humor. Our house is important to us, and we trust him to help us take care of it. He does the right things the right ways – every time.
