Daniel P. Gordon
Contractor
Dan Gordon is a skilled contractor who could be more successful if he operated his business honestly. His arrogance and delight in conning his customers, however, affects all of his interactions. We hired Dan to remodel our master bath and second floor deck even though he refused to sign a contract committing to his fees, his timeline, or the exact scope of the work. We didn’t want to remodel the hall bath until next year, even though it’s next to the master bath, in order to save some money.
Dan and his crew seemed off to a good start with the demo on our failing deck and the initial rebuilding of a new one. Then they began the demo of the master bathroom. Because our house is 90 years old, they also replaced the stack (waste pipe) shared by the master bath and the hall bath. Hours later, while I showered in the hall bath, the living room ceiling under the hall bath burst open as water gushed into the living room. Their demo and reattachment of the stack (waste pipe) to the hall bath broke the waste pipe in the hall bathroom. There was now a big hole in the old waste pipe in the master bath, about 18” from where the old waste pipe was joined to the new stack.
To keep our plumbing operating, Dan opened up the living room wall and ceiling further and hung a huge bucket from the open space. He told us that he did not have time to remodel our hall bath, but that this was our only solution. He then told us no other contractors had time to fit us into their schedule, so he would be forced to take on this job. His reckless demo forced us into this project.
Then, he also told us that he would be remodeling our kitchen next, and that his kitchen customers are so delighted that they cook him lobster and filet mignon dinners. We did not take him up on a new kitchen.
Dan then took 2 vacations, with only a few days in between. This meant that the work trickled down to a turtle’s pace. Dan’s second in command, Gadge, is competent when he wants to be, but often carelessly breaks things. He does no clean up, and creates an unsafe obstacle course around your house. Gadge is as arrogant as Dan but lacks Dan’s charming façade. The third guy, Chris, is hard-working, dedicated, polite, and does beautiful tile work! Chris was the only saving grace.
By the time Dan returned from his second vacation, we were finding it increasingly difficult to bestow the constant praise that Dan demands. The overflowing dumpster that Dan left in our driveway was beginning to stink. We were tired off the mess and unfinished work. Dan’s response was to take promised tasks off his punch list while he used fuzzy math to escalate charges. When we tried to reconcile his charges based on earlier invoices, Dan’s rage was frightening. Dan said that our telling him what his crew broke was disrespectful to him, so he abandoned our job altogether for 2 weeks. We tried to fire him, but after his barrage of threatening emails and texts, we thought allowing him to finish would be the easiest path.
Dan’s carpentry and Chris’s tile work are solid, but the drama, inconvenience, and extra expense were not worth it. Dan behaves like a spoiled child. Dan Gordon is like a squatter who charges you for taking over your space, and you gladly pay to evict him. We look forward to getting to the point that we can laugh at his narcissistic invasion of our home!
