Haiss, Karl
Owner
Karl Haiss, Owner of Haiss Construction, Incorporated, built my second home located on a mountain six miles south of Bryson City, NC in 2007. The General Contract required construction in accordance with plans and specifications for my log home package purchased from Honka Corporation of Helsinki, Finland. This high-quality log home product included engineered and precisely milled interior and exterior polar pine logs, European style windows and doors crafted in Germany, and all hardware for the log structure. Site-work required excavating and pouring a robust reinforced concrete foundation, a walk-out finished lower level, and completion of the sub-flooring one week before delivery of the log home package shipped from Finland to the port at Charleston. The bottom run of logs precisely fit the sub-flooring and pre-set anchor bolts. Once the exterior and interior logs were stacked, Mr. Haiss and his expert crew completed the framing, roof structure, floors of antique heart pine, and all finishing details on schedule and with within budget. This was complex construction, requiring a pre-planed construction sequence and constant innovation to account for settlement inherent with all log structures. Crew safety was top priority in this mountainous terrain. Due to the height, Mr. Haiss built the roof structure for an observation tower on the ground and lifted it fifty feet into place with a construction crane. The fit was perfect. A skilled carpenter himself, Mr. Haiss worked with his crew daily while managing the purchase and delivery of building materials and coordinating the work of electrical, plumbing, and HVAC subcontractors and other specialty work, including a masonry fireplace and chimney faced with East Tennessee field stone. The finished home reflects quality of construction that is a testament to the Honka product as well as the craftsmanship and attention to detail that is the hallmark of Karl Haiss and his company. I highly recommend him as a home construction professional who has earned the trust and respect of all his clients.
