Very unhappy with Tom Harrop and Son Remodeling. He contracted to do work in November of 2019 at my home to replace two exterior doors, one patio door, remove and replace 20 exterior window trims with pvc boards; replace a bow window with 3 sash windows; remove and replace a deck, and renovate a bathroom, plus odds and ends-like replacing rotted boards, subcontracting the roof for house and garage; adding a downspout, repairing some ceilings. As of May 2021, he had done the window trim, the deck the 2 exterior doors and patio slider, replaced a piece of sill under one of the doors, during which it was discovered that there was no tyvek or barrier between the exterior OSB and vinyl siding.. about 1300 square feet of vinyl, so I had him {his crew} remove and cover with tyvek and replace same vinyl. He replaced two exterior lights. He replaced the deck. That took him 18 months!. In November/December of 2019 he removed one exterior door, and then he boarded it up with plywood for 5 months. Granted we lost two months to Covid, when he did not come at all, although he could have worked outside. He had a million excuses why he didn't show up, from sick children, to flooded basements to having to take two days off because of putting a family dog to sleep... He would come between 9:30 and 10:00 a.m. and leave by 2:30 pm. There were maybe three days in that time that his crew, not he, put in a full 8 hour day. He would promise to work the whole week then not show up, when I had made plans to be there or rushed to get materials, often times without even a courtesy text to let me know neither he nor his crew were going to show up.
He is a very pleasant man, and can do nice work when he wants to, but takes shortcuts, for example, one of the exterior lights was hanging off the wall within a month of being put up. He put pieces of 1/4 inch pvc as an apron around my deck instead of using regular pvc trim boards, so the result is a ribbon/wave look when it is sunny because the pvc warms up, expands a lot, and buckles out between fasteners. I had to bring his attention to baseboard trim that he had replaced previously that had been cut at the wrong angle around the vanity trim, so that there was a gap on each side of the vanity. It had been put up anyway. He was to repair the rotted facia and overhang on the garage. He nailed the pvc trim board to the ends of rafters, some of which had rot on the ends, without cutting away the rot and at least scabbing on good wood, Then he just covered up the rotted board on the overhand by slapping on a crookedly cut piece of 3/8 inch PT plywood, without even trimming over the gaps left by the poorly cut plywood.
Then at the end of May, 2021 he left after a 4 hour workday; I didn't hear from him for over a week in spite of numerous texts. Finally he texted me to let me know that he was quitting his business, to go work for someone else, because the stress of chasing work ( he had at least $15,000 worth of work still, that he had not done), chasing employees and chasing money ( he had never asked me for money, I had always offered it, and constantly begged him for an invoice since it made me uncomfortable not knowing where I stood financially with him. He would promise to prepare it, but didn't until I would question him, and he'd always tell me that he had e-mailed it to me, and then would e-mail it "again". I did email searches and never found the first e-mail, only the "again" emails. This happened more than once.
He was always agreeable to redoing things like the overhang, or the baseboard trim. And some he did, but most of the things he started he did not finish...and he just left it like that and walked away. Now I am trying to find someone who will come in and fix/finish what he started, or didn't start like the bathroom renovation. Not easy to do at a busy time of the year.I have to admit that he was fair in his charges, although getting an estimate from him was pretty nigh impossible. He did clean up his work areas in house pretty well, but outside where he set up his sawhorses, my son was constantly picking up screws and nails.
It was my fault for putting up with his poor work schedule, but he always promised he would work "all next week" and everything was in a state of being partially done. I just wanted him to finish it. He didn't even have the decency to do that. On the next to the last day he worked, May 27, I had just told him that all my accounts had been hacked into and a lot of money had been stolen, and I was frantic! He said, "I guess its not a good time to ask for money!" I told him I still hadn't received an invoice since asking for one repeatedly since January. Ah, he had e-mailed it. A search found nothing, so he sent "again". It was for $3500.00. He is still waiting until I know what it will cost to undo and fix the things he did incorrectly. He was already paid close to $25,000. -

Tom is a great guy and very good contractor. He does a great job and doesn't try to take advantage of the new homeowner. He has remodeled my kitchen, remodeled my entryway after a pipe burst, and various other odds and ends. I would recommend him to anyone looking for an honest quote and great workmanship.

By Paula C.June 19, 2016bathroom remodel$4,0005 days
Was really disappointed with Tom Harrop. Remodelled a bathroom and botched the plumbing. Shower leaked into kitchen ceiling below. Bathroom sink leaked and ruined new vanity cabinet. Returned to fix leaking shower but was a no show to repair vanity. Also missed painting a section of bathroom wall and left bathtub faucet very loose on tub surround. Did not return multiple phone calls.

Said he was going to show up and never did. Then I call him and no answer. Got someone else to finish job. Just really bad work and customer service.
