Clay worked on our renovation in downtown Sarasota starting back in 2021 at the beginning. It was supposed to be a three-month-long project, and it turned out it went on for over a year and a half, then he left the project and didn't finish. To say it was a complete disaster would be an understatement. I was not going to write a negative review because I really try and not do that, although I felt guilty about not doing it because to me it seems important to protect future consumers. However, a recent development pushed me over the edge. We were awoken by a smoke alarm beep which kept us up all night because we couldn't figure out where it was coming from. We had three eventually different service calls. We paid electricians. We paid smoke alarm specialists. Nobody could find it. Finally, my wife, after getting a cup to the wall and a stethoscope, confirmed her suspicions that it was actually in the wall. So long story short, after many nights of no sleep, we figured out where it was. We had to cut open the drywall of the new wall that Clay and his team added, and there it was in the wall. I have pictures of it…hard to comprehend this actually happened… so I'm not surprised if you have never heard of such a thing because we surely had not. However, I must admit we were not surprised based on the incompetence of this builder. The issue though is incompetence is not the only characteristic. There is also his unscrupulous business methods and his nefarious way of running his business. They just dumped stuff everywhere. They took forever. They had more excuses than you can believe. They lied. They completely overcharged. In fact, it was already way overbudget, then out of the blue I got an additional bill which approached $200,000. I filed a complaint at that time with the construction department in Florida, and I told Clay that if he didn't remove that last erroneous bill, I would follow through. And not only that, he owed me money the way I calculated it by a long shot. But we moved on and I did not pursue the complaint any further. My bad. Don't use this guy unless you want to be lied to, overcharged, and end up with a quite unusual foreign object in your walls.
