By Martha C.July 18, 2021Install a light in a kitchen cabinet.
I called to have a light installed in a cabinet. They told me there would be charge to come to assess the work, about $125. Agreed, the charge was $215. Paid. Then the next trip out was one light, not two, and the desire to charge me again. I asked to purchase the light and to try to find another and hire another electrician. No was that answer. Called two more times to inquire about a second light, and was told none were available. Called another electrician, he told me what to purchase and came and did the installation and my billing was close to what it cost to make the preliminary trip by Hobbs that accomplished nothing. I should have read the Hobbs reviews before calling them but hired them years ago and was very satisfied. Guess the newer generation employed there is not the same. They need to know they cannot live on an old reputation. Would never recommend Hobbs for anything.

No, I would not recommend. I asked them to come out and give me a quote on installing accent lights. It so happened that my pool lights were not working so I asked if they could look at those when they were here. I was told that they don't work on pool lights that perhaps I should contact a pool light electrician. I asked if they could at least tell me if the problem was the bulbs that needed to be replaced or just an electrical issue. I was told they could check and let me know.
They came out and determined right away that the problem was electrical as the bulbs were in working order when turned on manually. It was decided that it was a bad time clock. They did not have one in their truck and would have to come back the next day. At that time, I said I had a new time clock but was not sure if it was the one, he needed. He said it was and proceeded to install it. He was done and set it to turn on at 8pm that night.
The timer did not turn on, so I called the next morning. I was told that I should try to call a pool light person because if they came back and it was another issue, they would have to charge me for another service call. I explained to her that it was previously determined that there was nothing wrong with the pool light bulbs that it was electrical. I told them my husband thought that the timer was not the right one that they needed a lower voltage one.
My husband was here to meet them the second day. They came out with a different timer and installed it. However, it took two men, 2.5 hrs. to do so. They walked around quite a while looking at the landscape lighting connections and such at which point, I told them don't waste time with the landscape lighting it has nothing to do with the pool lights. I have a landscape person that maintains the lights for us. They finally left after 2.5 hrs.
The lights are working again thanks in part due to the fact that they took my husband's advice (who is not an electrician). The electrician told me as he left that my husband was right all along. Bottom line I said, "all I needed was the correct time clock and now it's going to cost me an arm and a leg". I told him to please let the company know that we will not be doing any more work with them. He walked away embarrassed understandably, not saying much.
I was right, when I got the bill, I not only was charged for 2 service calls but for 2 men for two days three hours each to put in a new time clock.
Hobbs Electric was recommended to me, but I will not do that to anyone else. I am not sure if my experience was due to unethical business practice or complete incompetence but whatever the reason, I will never do business with Hobbs Electric again. They have been in business for a long time, and I guess had a good reputation, but you can't live on that alone. You are as good as the people that represent your company. Rubi Kellgren
